Any good? Not many people are actually posting about this phone, as shown by the limited search results. I've had a play around with this phone last week for about ten minutes but I don't know what I think of it yet..

Any first hand reviews here? It's lovely and affordable too :)

it would be my pick out of the low end androids that are available in it's price range

i suggested one to one of the lads a few weeks ago - he keeps texting me at random times whenever he finds extra cool features/apps to say how good it is

Hahaha, fantastic. I'll keep this one in mind so :)

    Found this gem:

    http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phones/San-Francisco-from-Orange-in-grey

Only problem is the postage. Anyone know of an easy way to get it to Ireland?

I would strongly advise against a Sony Ericsson. Build quality of late has been very poor.

I picked up one last week while in the UK for a few days.
Plenty of info on blade.modaco.com on how to unlock, root & rom this phone.
And some of the members are buying and shipping units for those that can't get them.
    I should've picked up a few while there :-)

The phone is a ZTE Blade (P729B) rebranded for Orange UK.
I bought & unlocked mine for a total of €128 - still cheaper than the cheapest Android handsets on Meteor :-)

Some of the Members on MoDaCo are working on getting Froyo on this asap. Plenty of community around the phone and looks like a great phone for the price.

Mine is working perfectly, battery lasts the day with some light usage (Wifi, Bluetooth, Tether etc) but it does need to be charged daily, won't be a problem cos I can charge it from my work PC.

Yeah i'm having a "San Francisco" sent over too. Hopefully arrive tomorrow or Monday. By all accounts it looks to be a fantastic phone. Paul gave it a thorough review on Modaco and Tech Radar just gave it a very good review too. Best "bang for buck" android phone out at the month it would seem.

I'll give some more thoughts on it when I have it in hand.

@the Shire: It'd be great if they got the phone/radio part of froyo working. Looks like its giving the phone a very decent performance boost

How are you getting it sent over if you don't mind me asking? :)

Oh sorry. I'm just getting a friend living over there to send it over.

Here's the forum page where MoDaCo members are trying to help out.

Or, a drive up to the north may be on the cards.

Okay, so I've come to the realisation that there is no way possible for me to get an OSF shipped here for under 120 euro, which makes me rule that phone out.

However, I've been looking at the Galaxy Europa (i5500) again, but so far theteal has only given me information on it (thanks to the other posters for the SF info :) ). Europa users, how is it?

    Hi Colbri

considering one myself, good value for Android with Wifi

Lots of pros (for the price) according to online reviewers

    However
Screen a bit small, res is on low side, I could be wrong but the low res may stop some apps from running properly, perhaps one of the Android gurus here might verify Some isolated reports of wifi issues, low range and dropped connections

From my reading up it seems good value, and is it my first Android, I'm going to get one (Dont want to spend too much)

Got one today, lovely yolk :) takes a while to get used to it but the small screen is grand! Swype is very handy too. Fast phone too, very responsive. Worth more than 99 definitely!

Let us know how the Wifi is on it, please

What's the screen res like? Who did you buy it with?

    :)

    I've got one...

Its pretty awesome, aside from slightly laggy when playing "Angry Birds"
But thats my only complaint, and it hasnt stopped me completing it either!

texting etc is fine, screen res is great, even quite durable(dropped it loads, no scratchs even)

Anything more specific u wanna no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 654 ✭✭✭Colibri

Wifi is fine, hasn't dropped a connection on me yet! Best thing about the small screen resolution us that it is very responsive. When typing, if you've made a mistake it'll almost guess it and change it.. It's usually right too! Does take getting used to though. I'm on meteor :)

    Im meteor to...

It also has great reception.I used to never have reception in my house with my old nokia... now i do... well most of the time... it's still meteor ;)

Just as you say it, my Wi-fi has been acting up so I googled for some results. It turned out to be the router's problem and not the phone's. Quick router firmware upgrade solved it :)

    Phone is lovely!

Hmmm trying to decide between this and the sony ericsson x8 , the x8 is down to 109.99 on vodafone. I think I'll pay a visit to a shop and have a look at them both.

I was also trying to decide between the Samsung Europa and SE X8 with vodafone. Went for the X8 in the end when they offered the special with this Bluetooth speaker for €119. These are worth about 30-40 euro alone, and it’s something extra to play with over the Christmas ;) (Details here)

Specs-wise they are similar, but the X8 does include a 2GB MicroSD card, compared to 1GB with the Europa

But what really pushed me towards the x8 is that it seems all provides are pushing the Europa this Christmas. I just felt like every man and his dog will have one in the new year!

I purchased a Europa from the Meteor store for the missus 89 euro delivered. I then got it unlocked here http://www.mobileunlocked.co.uk/Samsung/Galaxy+Europa/ for 18.99. I've only had a small play with the Europa but
I have to say I was very impressed with it given it's almost a quarter of the price I paid for my HTC Desire. Get it while you can. I don't think you can go wrong for the price.

I'd say the fact that it'll be very common is a good thing. I expect to see custom Froyo ROM's and rooting guides very soon.
