:( I recently left an abusive home with the help of a community welfare officer and former social worker. I am on the housing list and have been approved for rent allowance in the place I am renting. He rang after my application to tell me me that I had been approved and he would ring me again soon. He rang on the 7th and hasn't rang since I know this isnt long but im wondering how long does it take for rent allowance to come through after it has been approved. I have no family home so if im kicked out im homeless. I have savings to last me another month, for rent food and bills.

No-one here will be able to answer your question I'm afraid. If you're worried about running out of money contact the CWO again.

I appreciate that thanks for your reply, its just that I assumed when you were approved of rent allowance you got it fast enough. I thought the process of approval would be the longest part. I would love to know even the average time people waited after approval for their first payment and is it payed into their bank accounts or post office etc. Any help would be appreciated as I am not even in receipt of social welfare payments.

Yes, once it's approved it's usually immediate ie ready for collection a few days later, but I've never had a CWO phone me etc. That's why I think you should get back on to them, but maybe somebody else has more info.

The CWO usually tells you in person that it's ready when you've submitted all the necessary documents. That's why I think you should go to see them. I've never heard of someone getting a letter or call to inform them their claim was successful.

Your very helpful I do appreciate it, I went to the post office today and theres defiantly no money cheque or whatever waiting for me or my pps number isnt on the system. I already dropped the forms in on the 7th of this month and the same day he told me that I have been approved. My rent is paid monthly and I assume so is the rent allowance because of the bank holiday I wont be able to see my cwo until wednesday.

Hmm ... well, this is just hypothetical now but did they tell you how it would be paid or whether it would be weekly or monthly? My CWO said that the monthly cheques go out on the last Monday of the month so some would be arriving in the middle of the week. I'd still go to see them and check up. It might have just slipped through the cracks.

if you have been approved you should start getting it right away. it is usually sent to your address in your name. sometimes though they will send it direct to your landlord so i would enquire with them to see if they may have received anything if not it will be back dated to date of application. i would definatly go see your cwo as they may give you a cheque to help keep you going till you recieve your allowence and it will then be taken from your back payment

A girl I know has Rent Allowance but didn't receive her cheque one month - it turned out that all the cheque (all the Rental Allowance for that area) went direct to the Health Board address - as so many cheques had gone missing through the post..

yes this can happen but your friend should have been notified in writing prior to this.
