Dont know whether this is the right thread for this ,if not my apologies, anyway in 2004 i was on holiday in portugal, after being out that night i got stopped coming back to the hotel at a checkpoint by the gnr,(portuguese police) i was breathalysed & over the limit & they took me to the local station where they got my details and said they be in touch and of i went, I came home and after a few months thought nothing of it, then to my surprise i have just received a registered letter from the department of justice & law reform that i have a trial starting this november to answer drink driving charge of 2004,i rang above department and they said of the record to ignore it, ? should i

doesnt sound like they'd be sending you straight to 'trial' for a drink driving charge thats 6 years old and from another country.

sniff sniff, something smells off in here

I think I'll open a brewery and start making my signature beer.

    I shall call it "Driving".

Imagine the confusion: 2 lads in a bar...

    So, what are ya drinkin'?

    Driving.

    What? You're driving?

No, no. I'll have a Driving?

    I don't get ya.

I'm drinking Driving, it's my new thing.

Drink driving. Are you sure that's a good idea?

Ah yeah don't worry, I'm used to it now, I like drinking Driving, it's great stuff.

It took them 6 years to get to you?
That's a bit of a joke on their part.

Better do some anus widening excercises to prevent ripping when you go to Portugal!!

Trump up a death certificate in your own name on Photoshop and send it to them proving you are dead.

OR just ignore it, what's the worst that will happen you'll get convicted in your absence and disqualified from driving in Portugal. Hardly the end of the world.....never been to Portugal but I understand it's full of Golf bores and overtanned aul ones.

Since we have a dedicated forum for (drink) driving queries I'll drive this thread over there.

On topic, see a solicitor about this.

Id imagine you would be safe enough ignoring it once you stay away from Portugal for a while. Its a drink driving charge not a serious crime there is no way they will come after you for it other than sending threatening letters.

Do they have a Statute of Limitations in Portugal?

Id imagine they cant do anything its not that serious of a crime but If yo where to enter Portugal again they could lift you for it

Surely the dept of justice and law reform referred to in the post is the Irish one, not Portugese? Looks to me that the OP is facing charges here at the request of the Portugeezers! contact a brief!

    Not possible.

The sensible advice is to contact a solicitor and spend some money but if it was me I'd ignore it. If it took them six years to get around to sending you a letter if it ever gets to court they'll realise you left the country a long time ago and it's not worth pursuing.

It is the Irish dept of justice who received a letter in portuguese which they then translated ans sent on to me,....seeing a brief next week thanks all ;)

Ok so the Irish dept of justice was just doing the Portuguese authorities a favour by translating the letter. The Irish dept of justice won't be doing anything in terms of enforcement as they have no legal basis to do so.
