Red Meat

How much is too much? Years ago I remember the whole once or twice a week spiel I'd hear and that's obviously remained with me since. But these days I tend to eat roughly 3-4lbs of mince a week - is this considered okay? Other days I eat fish/chicken/pork.

Do you mind me asking if the contents of this article http://www.independent.ie/health/latest-news/excessive-meateating-kills-45000-each-year-2384969.html prompted your post today?

Ha nope! Eating lots of meat prompted it :) I don't read any newspapers and the article you linked too is one of the reasons why - it doesn't tell us anything really and doesn't tell us how the study was carried out or anything like that. I like how they decided to use a picture with some beef covered in what appears to be gravy.

I really wouldn't worry bout red vs white. There's very little difference between them unless you have a problem with too much iron, in which case you probably need to avoid oily fish too. Ruminant red meat such as beef and lamb has the best fatty acid profile of any meat.

How much of a percentage of protein is in your diet in terms of calories? I think the ideal is 15-20% unless your following a ketogenic diet, then you can go up to 25%.

I personally don't eat that much protein compared to the average person. It probably looks like more because fatty ground beef is 60% fat by calories.

Percentage of protein? Hmm, never really sat down and worked it out. Here's a very rough breakdown of what I'd eat in a week:

7kg of broccoli/cauliflower, few sweet potatoes after any training session
    1 whole chicken
    3-4lbs mince
    5 pork chops
    1 fish
Probably a few more chicken fillets, depends

Could have 30 full eggs in a week too. Nuts from cashews, almonds, brazil nuts etc. Good bit of butter too. Fruit of course. And most nights I'd have a hot chocolate with one tsp of Green & Blacks cocoa with some full cream, and I'd have 85% chocolate most nights too.

This is where you tell me to get my act together :D

Haha, I wouldn't dare, looks good <extreme nitpick>more variety in veg and some offal thrown in wouldn't do any harm</extreme nitpick> :D

I have no idea what that works out at a day, plug it into fitday, it should give you a quick count, bear in mind all the counts on fitday tend to be based around lean cuts so keep that in mind.

Well for veg I also have turnip/parsnip once a week and probably carrots too. As for offal, um, I've never really had. We're talking livers and the like here? Are these low protein/high fat?

I dunno bout 'low protein' but liver is pretty high in fat, and B12 and K2. 1-2 times a week is plenty. You seriously feel really good after eating liver. I'm on a bit of an offal odyssey at the moment. I'm currently contemplating how to cook lamb's heart that I saw in the local butcher. I hear it's hard to cook right.
