Anyone know what the deal is with the Halloween Ball this year, like dates, location, theme etc. I heard that it was in the Helix and that the theme was Harry Potter!!! Any truth?

Well Collies email answered all the questions i guess. Is it just me or is a Harry Potter theme a bit boring! I mean everyone will basically be in the same type of costumes (hogwarts uniforms, cloaks etc) where as if it was just a regular fancy dress ball you get more variety. Plus is this the first time in like 3 years the Halloween balls been on campus and once again an act that only makes say "Who?"

You're thinking inside the box. Go as a bludger. Or Hermoine/cat when she messes up the Polyjuice potion and half turns into a cat.

Anyone up for being my ass, and we can go as Professor Firenze?

Does we absolutely HAVE to be dressed up in harry potter gear??? It says it's essential in collies email...

Will anyone else be dressing as something NON harry potter? Cos I dont want to be the only one dressed as something other than Harry:pac:

    This is a big letdown!

Last year it was more expensive yes, but it was on in a mystery location. There was no specific theme so you had a massive range of different costumes. It was good craic, but I really couldn't be bothered going to this year's one since it's on campus and has a boring Harry Potter theme.

See, the people who know harry potter will know of the fairly vast range of people and creatures in it. a LOT of people won't have read every book/seen every film.
So it isn't a well chosen theme. Why need a theme at all really...

I know people who are going and I was wondering what date the ball is on because I was going to ask them out to something else, not that it's any of your business.

    Anyway, date anyone?

Why does it matter whether or not s/he's a student? Tickets are available to anyone.

why can't we just do whatever we want and for that reason alone I don't think I'll be attending

Who said you couldn't dress how you want?

When it comes to themes, people never really go all out to dress for that theme. At the 80's themed Freshers Ball most people ignored the theme and just dress as whatever (well me and a lot of the people I seen did).

wonder why they choose Harry Potter as a theme? Ok the movies end this year (or next year for part 2) and sure you do have more options then dressing as Harry himself, but a more general theme, like movie stars or whatever would have allowed for more variety

As for being in the Helix, it is a bit of a let down but i guess it cuts the cost down of renting a venue.

You don't HAVE to dress as a Harry Potter character. Think logically, no one's getting turned away at the door for dressing like a robot or a taco. Even so, Rowling 'borrowed' elements from pretty much all of fantasy. Anything fantastical and you're inkeeping with the theme.

I think Helix is a good alternative to last year, anyway. There were some issues, weren't there?

Well it was in Taylors three rock out near Marlay Park?I think getting there was the biggest problem. The bus I was on had to stop twice for people to have a piss.

Quote from Collie on a facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/pages/You-cant-theme-the-Halloween-Ball/154571801246252

    "Yo guys!

The Harry Potter theme was merely added to the event for a bit of craic, to generate a bit of hype and publicity amongst event sponsors and the various marketing and DCU stakeholder groups associated with the night...

The union is aware that not every student is a Harry Potter fan so please feel free to wear traditional fancy dress on the night to the ball next Tuesday but most importantly..have fun!!

    Hope to see everyone there

    Collie"

Odds are no one will read this between now and then but what are the hopes of getting a ticket at the door. Mate was trying to get one but where you get them was closed (Don't go to DCU he does though :D)

I'd say you'll get them... they didn't sell out.

So just pay in at the door then?

What time is it opening at?

I definitely rate the hub as a better venue than the Helix.
