Dundalk is in serious decline due to the very poor bookies.I wanted to have 500e on Johnstown Lad 14/1 no chance.I got 50e on four times other bookies just would not entertain my bet.Other than the greyhound people there would be nobody at the meetings.

You would be very lucky to get €500 on in the high street never mind at the track.

On Friday the Tote in Dundalk turned over more than Cork today or yesterday, and the same as Naas today. Is Cork and Naas in decline? Very few people attend all weather races in the UK, it's the TV money that keeps it and presumably Dundalk alive.

If your going to be having €500 bets in one chop get yourself a phone account with an exchange as it's unrealistic to expect it to be accept on the rails in Dundalk. Also the horse in question was only a 0.7 of a point off 14/1 on the Tote so it was easy enough to get the bet on in and around the desired price.

A 500 quid bet on it really could have changed the tote's price on it though bluetonic.

Of course thats true, it's hard to tell by how much as I've no access to figures for that race.

I still think at a small meeting like Dundalk it's unrealistic to try and have a €500 bet at 14/1. You need to be a bit more tactical when doing something like that at a place like that.

Added to that it's premature to say Dundalk is in serious decline because of this.

There is a well publicised spat between hri and the major bookies over pitches at Dundalk hence the major books do not stand at Dundalk.
    Those guys are small time.

I do agree with that about 500 on at 14/1. At a small evening all weather meeting many of the bookies might not even have that much money available to them.
OP were they all independents in the ring?

Even if I had the money I would not take that bet, it would smack of a gamble by connections.

I never bet with tote anymore, I had a 20/1 finish second with them and I did not even get my stake back!! I would rather know how much I have to bet on the next :D

Stay on the topic why would anyone have a bet on the track when there is so much uncertainty when it comes down to inquiries? At least with phone betting the majority of layers pay double result.

Granted everyone does not have access to an account or accounts may have limits but if you are a serious gambler then there are plenty of workaround options.

The Irish Tote is a joke, you couldn't have a bet on it as they take too much out of the pools. Compare how much they pay out compared to the sps. Most of the time its less, bar the long shots nobody has backed anyway.

People are betting off track because of garaunteed odds and you get paid 1st past the post as well as rules of racing. Why would you want to bet with Bookies anyway? I think they could all take Friday nights off.

    .

The irish Tote does need some work done to it. BUT one thing concerns me - Why is the Tote working in Australia, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore and France? The tote in Australia takes out 17.5% of each race and is then put BACK into the industry. Prizemoney is good and people arent walking away from the industry. USA prizemoney is fair, however when you have the majority of the betting public betting into the tote pools the industry takeouts are barely noticeable.

I get very annoyed reading about the loser bookies complaining about the levy they must pay - IT SHOULD BE AT LEAST 15%!! They leech of racing and try to give nothing back..
How many jobs could have been saved if more prizemoney was available OR more races were staged?

Maybe Dundalk would be better off racing during the day time anyway, they aren't getting as good a crowd as the dogs, the night meetings have as much atmosphere as a graveyard and they'd save a fortune on the lights.

Well one option is to bet through an acquaintance.

It's hardly bloody rocket science is it, use your noggin.

When pitches were divved out who the hell gave out the pitches to the current lot.I would love to name at least three bookies currently standing at the track who are xxxxxxx. There are two running next friday night Jaconet,Oversighted who have big chances. The greyhound people totally boost the tote as they arrive around 3rd last race. The last Sunday meeting had the lowest tote returnes this year 34,000e approx[no dogs].I can get 500e on my dogs later on on the night,no problem.I recently backed a Mark johnson filly at 5/2 150e,tote was 13/8.The Tote at the dogs is the same a recent trio payed 75 cents,an Irish all time low. They [Tote] continue to take a fixed percentage no matter the attendance, which is totally destroying both horse/dog industry.Dundalk is the best track in the country to go racing .Great track, facilities and road network.
