We are visiting the USA next month and plan to buy an iPhone and a laptop. Could anyone let me know how much import tax am I looking to pay?

Is the import tax/VAT applied for the amount over €430 of your personal allowance?

How much tax would I have to pay if I buy say an iphone worth €500 and a laptop worth €1000

Looking at the revenue website, Camera worth €500 is not charged any duty. How do I find out if the above items will be charged an import tax?

To be honest if it were me, i'd resurrect an old laptop and check it in. Dump it and buy your new one.
I wouldn't worry about the phone.
    But thats just me.

You would be liable for VAT on the electrical items at 21%

The only way to get an iPhone in the US is to sign up for a contract with AT & T. You would be better off getting one here as a pay-as-you-go costs around 550 euro. The US iPhone would also be locked to AT&T and you have to jailbreak it to get it to work on an Irish network

You would also be better off getting the laptop in Ireland or UK as the prices are fairly similar and the warranty and support are normally much better in the EU than in the US.

Also, if you buy a camera in the EU you would be covered by EU customer law which would give you much a much better warranty and support than if you bought in the US

Moved to Online Buying & Auctions - they have a lot of experience in this area over there.

    vat 21%
    duty - 5-13%
and remember its not just on the value of the goods but also on the freight costs

You'll end up with no warranty, and a US keyboard layout. Bear that in mind before you buy. Possibility of import duty and VAT, together with the US prices not being that much lower than Ireland/European prices means you'll probably end up saving nothing, or perhaps spending more.

Look locally, or on European sites, for a laptop. You'll get very good deals and not have to deal with the duty, VAT, warranty and keyboard implications.

Buying an iPhone while in the US will be fraught with difficulties. It can be done, but as others have said, there are things you need to look out for.
