The IAA have reported a bumper month in September, compared to the last year or two. The crisis at the IAA is over I gather.

I mean the financial cutbacks, payfreezes, pension issues, etc.

One good month does not make up for all the bad ones.

+1 , between the ongoing fall in tourist numbers and the very real likelihood we are entering a ' double-dip ' recession I think overall numbers will continue to fall.

The IAA's report doesn't make good reading (particularly for Shannon)

The traffic growth rates for the month of September 2010, are as follows:

Commercial terminal flights at Dublin were down by -2.1%
Commercial terminal flights at Cork were down -8.6%
Commercial terminal flights at Shannon were down -28.9%

However, for the period, January to September 2010, compared to 2009:

Commercial terminal flights at Dublin were down -10.4%
Commercial terminal flights at Cork were down -9.6%
Commercial terminal flights at Shannon were down -39.9%

Would it be correct to say that the principal reason for the fall in Shannon traffic is that with the winding down of U.S. military operations in Iraq that very few troops are now passing through ?

I'd say that would have more to do with Ryanair pulling alot of their routes from the airport.

Am I wrong? seriously I'm just guessing but I know Ryanair has really cut their Shannon routes alot!

I'm sure the Aer Lingus Heathrow route was in the 2009 figures too, plus some of their tranatlantic flights have been cut. I flew out of Shannon last month and it really is handy for people in the west, but those figures are not good.
