My mate has just taken his car back to teh dealer witha strange rattling noise when car idles and when you press the clutch slightly. I heard it and said it sounded an awful lot like the flywheel. Anyway long story short it was the flywheel bearing. Has any other A4 owners (new model A4 owners) had this problem? I want to know how common it is. The replacement is an upgraded one so I'm thinking why upgrade a part if theres no reason to upgrade it. VW had flywheel problems as did SEAT and both did recalls for them as far as I know. VW certainly did. So ahs anyone else had this problem?

The 2.0 tdi Passats are going at between 60k and 100k miles. Im sure the A4 is pretty similar. This is a problem across pretty much all modern manual diesels and some petrols.
If your friend has very small mileage, he should fight it.

It is an absolute disgrace no doubt

So much for brilliant build quality... Its amazing how vw and audi get away with this as in people are still mad about there cars (including me). If it was any other make we would all be up on high horses giving out..:)

We've got a fair amount of new model 2.0Tdi A4's (143 mainly) on fleet, and haven't had to replace the clutch / flywheel on any of them yet. The first batch that went out in Feb / March 08 are a fair bit over 100,000km now.

There was a small engine component issue with a couple of them at around 100,00km. Can't for the life of me remember what it was exactly, but I think it was a sensor and it was replaced under warranty on both, even though they were outside the 2 year warranty.

Cheers for all the replies folks. Havign gotten hold of an Audi mechanic over the weekend I was informed that the spiggot bearing in the A4's are not uncommon to go and that in the particular garage he works in they have replaced a few. Some are having shafts replaced also as the shafts are being left scored.

    I'm the owner of an 06 A4 Avant - 90,000 miles.
Flywheel gone - looking at 1500 to replace.
I contacted Audi customer service but no joy.
It's disappointing as Audi is trading on reliability and technology.
