Street Parking Permit - Dublin City

    Hey,

I'm looking for some advice on car parking permits in Dublin.

I'm going to be moving into a house in Rathmines which is on a small lane with very limited parking. Parking in the lane doesn't require a permit but as it's often so tight and packed with cars I was thinking of getting a permit for the adjacent main street where a permit is definitely required.

My question is - will the council give me the permit to park on this street even though I'm only a resident of the laneway and do not actually live on that main street?

    Many thanks,

    J

Strictly speaking, the address has to match, but in practice, it may depend.

Where I live there is ample parking as its on the edge of the pay zone and the commuters park a few streets away where parking is free. Also, houses are only on one side of the street where I am, so its never busier than about 20% full. I imagine some of the residents in adjacent pay streets, where it is busier have permits for here, even though they may strictly speaking have a different address (thats fuzzy enough as there are "terrace" addresses, etc., but off topic).

I imagine one of the grossly over-subscribed streets in Portobello or Ranelagh means that its strictly residents only. Your address has to match.

In comparison, in Cologne your disk is for a neighbourhood (Belgisches Viertel), not street (Bismarckstraße).

Thanks but I'm still a bit up in the air as to what to do.

My new address on the lane does not require a street parking permit but ironically, it is usually packed with cars while the main street beside it which does require a permit isn't usually too bad.

Should I just apply for a permit and see what happens or try to talk to someone in the relevant office in DCC?

Collect together all the documents (check carefully!) you need and go into them on the ground floor on Wood Quay and explain your situation. If you have a small map of the lane and adjacent street and a few photos showing the lack / surplus it might help.
