am considering starting the fly fishing for the trout in the local river come the start of next season, what weight of a rod would you need? and the size line?

it depends but a 9 foot for a 5 weight would cover most rivers

My vote for almost identical general purpose setup - a 9' 6" #5 weight.

For smaller rivers I'm really getting into 7'6"-8' with a #3-4 line (makes for much better action on fish less then 1lb), larger rivers what Cool and Fisher have already suggested is probably best.

I'd go for the 9' 5# as well unless the rivers you'll be fishing are fairly small, then I'd go for a 8'6'' or 9' 4#. Personally I use an 8'6'' 4# mostly, I find 5# often too much rod for dry fly fishing (unless it's windy).
