Hoping someone can help me. Bought a new CANON 550 about a week ago and took it with me on a family week-end to celebrate my mother's significant birthday down in Kellys. Never read the instruction booklet - just popped the SDHC card into the card-slot and started snapping away.
Inserted the card into my PC but it appears that the PC isn't reading the card. Having consulted the manual, it appears I should have formatted the card first. However, manual warns me that when I format the card, it will erase all existing images on the card.
Any ideas for how I can transfer the images from the card onto my pc or a momeory stick or something ?

Have you got a USB cable that will connect the actual camera to your computer... This may require you to upload the Cannon software onto your computer(sometimes CD included in box or sometimes download from website)

You should be able to download the pictures then through the connected camera to your computer

Most if not all new SDHC cards are pre-formatted. It seems unlikely that
the camera would write your images to an unformatted card. Are you
sure your pictures are on the card? Can you view them on the camera LCD?

If you are using an older card reader, it might not support newer SDHC
or SDXC cards. Try using the USB cable to read them off the camera.
Try a different card reader or a laptop with built-in SDHC reader.

If you do end up having to format the disc try recuva to recover lost files

I'd be trying every other option first though

The cord should already be formatted and the camera will simply add the DSC and Misc folders to the card once you power it up. If you can see the photos on the camera then the files should be there.

When you open the card in Explorer what do you see?

Have you used the SDHC card previously?

It sounds like your card reader is not SDHC compliant. A lot of them are not, to resolve this you need to download a patch from Microsoft, or if this is already on your machine, as it should be from XPSP3 onwards, you need to download new drivers for your device.

Even generic SDHC drivers from Texas Instruments are likely to cure your issue.

But connecting up the cable to the camera in the meantime will allow your to get your pics COPIED off the card.
