I have a quick query I've gotten thru to the last stage of an interview process in another country. They are looking for proof that I have a clean criminal record. I've gone to the guards but they have told me that I need to get the employer to contact thurles to get it. The citizen information center tell me I need to get request the following a Police Certificate to state I have no record but it states it is not for employment. And the vetting process appears to be not applicable to this.

Any help would be great. If this is not the correct place for the post can you point me to a section it might be.

You can do a search on criminal record checks on boards.ie and I think more advice will pop up.
When I needed to get a criminal check for a foreign visa I was bounced between thurles and Garda station.
Local Garda kept directing me to thurles and Thurles vetting told me that your regional Garda station is the correct place to get it done regardless of what the Garda on duty says.

So essentialy do up letter to Superintendant, bring id and list of any previous address and tell local station that they and not Thurles do it.
This may take some persuasion but they will eventually do it.

Thanks for the help with that. I will go to the station tomorrow and deliver the letter tomorrow with all the bits.

Your local Garda station is not the place to go.

Stations only issue police certificates of character for those applying for foreign visas, they will not issue one for any other reason. If your employer requires you to be vetted by the Gardaí they need to register with the central vetting unit in Thurles, which will provide them with the necessary forms which you complete & return to Thurles.

Edited to add: sorry I missed the bit where you said it was for work abroad, in that case do go to your local station. Bring your passport with you as they'll need to take a copy of it.

There's a phone number on the bottom of this page. Call them and tell them your situation, they will tell you exactly what you need to do.

    Hi roryq.

I had the same problem a while ago, when applying for a certain overseas institution. I came across the same red tape. All I needed was a letter saying "no convictions, no arrests, no court appearances pending".

Let me tell you, it was a nightmare to do, cause it wasn't

    a) for a foreign visa and
    b) this certain institution wasn't registered within our state for vetting purposes (thus making Thurles completly unusable, as they would only do it if it involved proper registered employers)

In the end I did something similar to this guy:

But in all honesty I was very very lucky with who I had to approach about that. Explain to the super that you just need a letter saying that you've no convictions etc. I'd put your mobile number on the letter, and be prepared to explain why you want it. Good luck
