    wow.......

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2010/1013/coin.html

A limited edition €15 silver proof collector coin was launched today by the Central Bank.
The coin features an Irish hunter horse alongside its foal and honours the first coins of the Irish Free State, which were issued in 1928.
Designed by Emmet Mullins, the coin is a modern interpretation of the original horse design which featured on the half crown by renowned designer Percy Metcalfe.
It is the first in a three-year series to be followed by the salmon and Irish wolfhound in 2011 and 2012.
A special presentation of the coin was made to the Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Siochána, Michael Feehan, who received the coin on behalf of the Mounted Support Unit.

    can i haz one ?

was of time and "MONEY" !?!?!?!?

    i assume its legal tender.

i'd say shops would be fussy about it just like a €500 note.

but i don't see the problem with it... if one was handed to me as payment for something i'd take it... i don't see why not like.

    15euro... looks like a 20p to me..

I hate the way they always coin the phrase "collector's edition". Do you need to be a collector to get one?

    I'll get my coat.

that is actually a good question.

cos apparently we're the only country to get this, if we did take it to spain or somewhere similar would they accept or can they do anything with it cos they don't actually get them ?

That's what I mean... it is actually legal tender or is it just a collector thing that can never be used?

    well it is money...

otherwise what would be the point,

why even give it a value if its never gonna be used.

i say yes most likely we can spend it but in other countries i dunno.

I'll take 100! It'll be fun trying to put them in coke machines.

It is legal tender, and you can technically use it, but I imagine trying to spend it abroad would prove difficult. It's probably a similar situation to places in England refusing Scottish or NI Sterling (based on the fact that they can't be bothered to educate themselves on what fake and forged Scottish and NI Sterling looks like) even though it's legal tender.

So it's pointless then! The Euro is an international currency, who's the twat who decided Ireland should have a unique coin?

Can you imagine handing that over a counter in a country that had never seen one? I think I'll go home and print off some Irish €150 notes tonight and see how it works out next time I go away.

Don't know about NI sterling, but Scottish notes are not legal tender in England.

Surprisingly, they are not even legal tender in Scotland.

Only in ireland would a 15 euro coin cost you 32... Ok its in a fancy case and all, but come on! Sell it for 15 with no case!

I was about to quote you saying "Don't be so stupid", but I took the precaution of investigating your claim.

    Ridiculous.

    man if you only knew.
i have sh!tloads of gold and silver cause the euro is fooked

It's a nice little earner for the government. People will buy these and the other coins coming out, and not put them into circulation. Plus, you can sell them to American's for 10 times the price.

its legal tender and if i worked in a shop id gladly take it, it may increase in value and collector coins general do to in the end be alot more than face value.

the fact is most people would never actully use them and tend to put them on display or just leave it in a press

I can just see myself collecting my labour some day and getting handed 15 or so of these.....

It would be interesting if your robbing a till

I can just see the headline "Robber gets beaten to death with 15 euros."

It would probably have far less purchasing power then the half crown had in its day, they even look similar

How is this news? The Central Bank bring out special coins like this a couple of times a year, I've gotten countless things in the mail about them since I bought the ones they released for the Special Olympics
