    Hi all,

Just wondering if someone can tell me why JDM cars have a big gaping hole in the rear bumper where the reg plate goes?

Mine has this and I have the normal EU plate on it but there's still part of this hole showing above it. It never bothered me, I'm just wondering why it's like that.

Because in Japan the registration plates are a different shape. :P

I know they're a different shape but why have a big hole in the bumper? Why not just have the bumper like we do here? You don't see oblong holes in EU bumpers...

Marterial/weight saving in a place that will be covered anyway? Just get a jap sized plate if it bothers you that much on your car

Probably saves like a few yen per car they're pretty mad into their efficency over there would probably save a lot when you're making cars by the hundred thousand - just a guess though, I got the same in my MR2 - got the big lisence plate though.

Is this where possibly rear fog lights are usually located on some models? Rear fog lights are mandatory on all cars sold in the EU, they are not in Japan afaik.

    Foglights if as above, otherwise...

Snow, and lots of it (in many parts). Recessed aperture protects the plate somewhat from falling snow and all the salt and crud that gets sprayed up onto the back of the car thereby leaving the plate unobstructed for the would be reader.

As an aside, the plate goes with the car and driver - if you buy a used car you get get new plates registered to you, your tax and insurance. Sell the car, return your plates.

There is also a stylistic penchant for over-the-top body mouldings which may explain cavernous spaces for plates such as 55-55 (go go – go go) numbers which represented luck or speed in Japanese or English. Subaru were keen on the 555 as model nomenclature for example. Numbers can be personalised within the confines of the main four digit identifier (the area code (top left), Japanese letter mid-left, and cc indicator (number top right) can't be touched). Some plates are cherished, often with added leds or body kit affectations as a result.
