My friend tried to book a VRT Inspection at Letterkenny and was told there was no appointments available. I checked online at ncts.ie and right enough there is no availability showing at all. What is going on? How are they supposed to get it cleared, or drive the car in the meantime?

well even when you do get an appointment they may have to do a manaul valuation as this is what they are doing now .
i brought my car to the nct center two weeks ago and the revenue are still looking into it now .
    what a joke.

Well, start by ringing them and/or the VRT department in Revenue anyway..

If the car is currently insured by an Irish insurance company you've only got 42 days insurance on foreign plates, see:

Well she has already called the NCT centre and they said they have nothing and were unhelpful! I think its disgraceful, especially when they would even go to Sligo but they have no appointments either. If you look at ncts.ie you will see there is no date at all available for either of these centres. The person has the few thousand it will cost waiting to pay it, but it looks like NCT aren't bothered!

maybe its that this centre doesnt do them. Not all NCT centres wuill be doing these inspections

Nope they do them, just completely booked out! If you put a reg no and make up a name and address and put it into ncts.ie you will see them on the list.

Then your friend should contact the Revenue directly, IIRC there's an information number given when you phone too book an appointment at the NCTS centre.

I also tried to register a car today in Kells. Was told to make an appointment to come back in 3 weeks - next available slot.

    Also need to bring:
    - v5 doc
    - pps number
    - proof of my address
    - bill of sale
    - proof of date of entry to state

So much for the private sector efficiency - when the revenue did this directly it was much easier and quicker....

Yeah, except people got away without paying VRT indefinitely..

That's all listed on the revenue site too:
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vrt/purchase-car-abroad.html

It's also on the NCTS site here:
    http://www.ncts.ie/vrt.html

In my view the most frustrating thing about the registration process being outsourced is that the people running it are completely process-driven and can't handle any deviation from the process their given. This means no logic can be applied to any delays etc. It's a disaster.
