hi folks, im travelling to prague and am wondering if my maps app will work offline ie when i have data roaming switched off in setings, a friend said that i should cache the city map before i leave and it will be able to work. will i be able to see my location (blue dot) on a cached map using gps or will i need data switched on for that facility? i dont want to be stuck with a huge bill when i return, thanks a mill in advance.

GPS should work fine, no harm Googling the Wifi situation; free hotspots, daily rates from wifi providers etc. Always worth checking out.

one more question please, do i need to turn off 3g in the settings to avoid a massive bill or is it sufficient just to have data roaming turned off? im not exactly sure the difference between them i want to still be able to receive text messages and calls, thanks folks

Most of the GPS Navigation apps have built in maps so you do not need to have a data connection.

I doubt you'll be able to cache enough map data to make google maps usable without a data connection.

while in Turkey i had Data Roaming off and GPS worked perfect, pin pointed my photos etc but google maps wont work. it will find your location but without the data connection, the actual maps wont load.

I use an app called OffMaps. Let's you download maps before you go so you don't have to download anything using roaming data. You can also download a guide for most cities that allows you to search for street names, attractions etc. It's not free but it's well worth it if you travel a bit and like to find your way around a foreign city and not run up a massive roaming bill.
