Ryanair Duty Free

Returning from Alicante Airport recently and noticed a sign in duty free saying you can carry one bag of purchases from the duty free shop on Ryanair as well as your carry on luggage if you paid 20c for plastic bag (which went to charity).Was dubious but was told on boarding it was OK. So not quite a bargain alert but as my luggage was full it saved me a bit of money. Not sure if this is only in Alicante Airport but handy to know.

I don't really get it..

.. you paid 20c to bring a bag of Duty Free on a flight?

I mean I've bought Duty Free in various airports and the bags were normally free, and they allowed you to bring it on board no question.

Ryanair usually charge you for the duty free as excess baggage as far as im aware, with the exception of a few airports who wont allow them to introduce such a sly measure

Everything (dutyfree,coats,handbags,laptops,cameras etc.) has to go into your one piece of luggage or there is a €30 charge

Not sure about that, I've often gone through with my carry on luggage (normally a laptop bag) and a duty free bag and there was never an issue - have I just been getting away with it?

Previous posters are aleuding that all items must go into one CARRY ON CABIN luggage, you can put your duty free into your carry on, but if it does not fit you are liable to second carry on cabin luggage charge

I think what the OP means is that Ryanair are quite strict with your carry on luggage - you can only bring one piece on board. Usually if girls have a bag and a handbag, they make them put the handbag into the main bag etc. The fact that you can carry a second duty free bag gives you some extra storage space.

From Ryanair Terms and conditions
"Each passenger (excluding infants) is permitted to carry one piece of cabin baggage on board (free of charge). Strictly one item of cabin baggage is permitted per passenger (excluding infants). Your handbag, briefcase, laptops, shop purchases, camera etc must be carried within your permitted 1 piece of cabin baggage."

The only catch is there's no duty free on flights between Ireland and Spain.

Well not strictly duty free but purchases from the duty free shop which are much cheaper than here (€11.90 litre whiskey) and people with coats over their arm (hot over there) were made put them in luggage.

I think this is airport dependant. On Tuesay in Dublin they were strictly checking peoples bags at the gate queue.
In Berlin on Thursday, the check was done at security by ground staff. Therefore purchases after security probably could get through. No check at the gate (though flagrant abuse might has caused them to notice).

In the past I've put camera lenses in my coat pocket, hidden the camera under my coat (which was on me). If I wore a hat some stuff could go there too. Recently my wife brought home a souvenir glass bottle. She stuffed knickers in it to save space. Security guy was highly amused!

Bristol Airport has the same arrangement with Ryanair. You can purchase in the airportshops and carry on to the flight without incurring extra carry on baggage charges. I think Ryanair get reduced landing charges for allowing this (not 100% sure). Its a way by the airports authorities to boost sales in the airport shops.

They seem to be strict in Ireland/UK but not as much elsewhere. In Bristol they even asked me if I was carrying just one piece of luggage (which was a pretty stupid question since they could easily see that I was).

Next they will want you to be able to fit the clothes you are wareing in your bag.
