    hi all,

my sister (20) started a level 8 degree course. she applied for the maintenance grant. just the other day she was told she would not be eligable to claim anything, the reason being she started a course last year, attended 3 lectures and decided the course wasn't for her. just want to make clear she did not receive any money whatsoever from the grant department last time around. She did not think this would have affected her claim for this year. she is devasted over this as she may have to leave college as she nor her mom can not afford the repayments due to personal reasons.

doesnt seem fair that although she did not receive a penny last time round she is not entitled to anything, when there are people purely going back to college just to milk the system.

What can she do, if anything Guys?

    1 appeal it
2 look for other finance sources; vincent depaul, the special assistance fund usually managed by the college or SU

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

did your sister apply for a grant for the first year in college?
your saying that she didnt get any payments.

is there not a second chance option?
i know you can only get grant aided for year once but if your sister didnt get a grant...:confused:

    apply is the only option.

yes that is correct. she did not receive any payment. last year when she applied for a course she did not even apply for the grant. she lasted 3 days and decided to go down a different career path

    Hi there,

my brother had a similar problem about two three years ago, he was in a similar situation and the VEC told him that it was a second course and he didn't qualify because of that. He got it this year but I think he couldn't get it for two years i think. The appeal failed first time, sorry if this bad reading but the VEC are pricks that way
