I think it might be a good idea to start an over 40's thread, the pub scene gets very tired, there must be other 'stuff' on? i'm relatively new to boards.ie so I hope this is ok.

Sure we'll give it a go. What do you think should go into this thread?

I'm not over 40 but I don't really like drinking much. It's a real struggle to find things to do. You could try visiting the likes of Coole Park, Ross Abbey, Bridgits Garden, The Sky Road in Clifden is pretty cool...so is the Alcock and Brown Landing Site/Marconi wireless station if you like history.

Oughterrard is nice for a stroll. Circular Road is good for a nice view of Galway "city"

The cinema is an obvious one but good movies are few and far between.

Most of the above is only really applicable to a nice day really. Have you considered trying to play golf? men and women of all ages seem to play it alot. You could try your hand at Poker in town.

Could head out to the Aran Islands some weekend.

Could organize bowling leagues for you and your friends...

Best words of advise would be learning a new skill like web design, photography, knitting etc. You can find a lot of information online freely available for these.

    I'm 40+.

Perhaps we could trade information about zimmer-frame repair specialists in Galway? :D

Seriously, I agree that we juniour-mid-lifers have different perspectives from the 20-somethings, but I think the beauty of the regional threads is that we're all in together: I've learned a lot from them, they've learned where the buses go from me!

OP, would a separate forum would be better?

What does any of that have to do with being over 40? I enjoy all those things and I'm 24. It's not like suddenly you hit middle age and just stop getting drunk every day. I very rarely drink.
How can you find it hard to find things to do? There are millions of things to do in Galway, there's the islands, the coast, the lakes the castles, there are infinate long dog walks if you just get in the car and go and explore somewhere you've not been before.

I agree, I think it's less an age thing and more about an alternative to the drink/pub/drink culture.

I have a lot of friends who don't drink, some are younger, some older. Some still go to pubs and gigs, others avoid places like that. Some I'd hang out with in a pub, others I would do something outdoorsy, go to a film/play with etc.

I also know plenty of folks 40+ (50+..etc) who party like rockstars, :)

A 'non pub scene what's happening' thread would be good for folks who don't like pubs in general, or avoid them for non-drinking reasons.

I like this, the idea of a "non pub scene, what's happening" thread, I'm not against the pub, per se, but fancy a bit more variety. Of course there's always interceptors bowl and car keys!! (nice one) - but I believe that might be a whole other 'thread'?

So is that the general opinion? what do we do? edit the oh so mature thread or start up a whole new one "Whats happening, non-pub"?

There is a forum for Non-alcoholic fun
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1015

There's threads for Cork and Dublin on the frontpage, I'm not sure about Galway.
