hearing aids on medical card

Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.
My grandmother is badly in need of a hearing aid(s),she's in hospital at the moment and is struggling to hear what anyone else in the ward is saying to her and its getting her down.
She is getting her hearing tested tomorrow and my father is going to pay for the hearing aids up front and get them for my grandmother asap,he doesn't want to have to go through the long drawn out process of getting them through my grandmother's medical card.
What I am wondering is,is there a way of claiming the money back on the medical card if the aids are paid for up front?

Hearing aids are allowed on the medical card but the cost in getting private ones can differ hugely. If you got money back I doubt it would be the full amount unless they are very basic.

My granny got the medical card hearing aids and so did my uncle but they were so bad they when private shortly afterwards and just paid for them!

    Thanks for the reply FC.
So its only certain hearing aids you can get on the medical card, sounds like the free glasses scheme.
I was reading an old thread on here earlier about hearing aids,1 poster mentioned that if your hearing was particularly bad the govt would pay half the cost of the hearing aids, does anyone know if that's still the case..

My granny was in her 90s and couldnt heard jot!! At least she kept her sense of humour when we had to shout at her!!

Her hearing aid had three sound settings on it and deffo got it on MC.

Asked my mum and my uncle paid for his aid and got nothing back. He is quite tight with money and if he would have been due something he would have looked for it!!

You could send an email on your grandmothers behalf to www.medicalcard.ie and ask but the way things are now Id be really surprised if you got anything back!

Saying that, if your grandmothers hearing improves and she is more comfortable thats all that counts really

    Good Luck
