Open up that jar of coins you keep at home. Pick up that penny you find on the street. Collect those coins down the side of your sofa. Irish people don't seem to spend copper coins (1c/2c/5c), instead choosing to hoard them.

After the changeover from the Irish punt to euro in 2002, while the vast majority of notes had been withdrawn, it was found that only 45% of the coins in circulation had been withdrawn.

Even today if you check your wallet, your copper coins will more than likely be of Irish origin. While it is common to receive a German or French €1 coin, our Irish copper coins are not being circulated around Europe. The mint produces them - provides them to shopkeepers - we're given them as change - hoard them in jars - the mint therefore has to produce even more, which cost more to produce than their bestowed value.

TL;DR Spend your copper coins and help the economy!

I wonder how much is 45% of coppers worth?

I save my coppers for putting them in socks and baiting people that look at me sideways.

They have handy machines in most Tescos that convert mountains of coppers to notes and usable coins. They take 10% for their own, but time is money and I simply don't have the wherewithal to spend tedious hours bagging up 1c coins to change at the bank.

I dump them into the change machines in supermarkets and get some money back. I saw some person (looked homeless) with two suitcases and it was about half full of pennys and other coins. :(

I have a big old jar thing that I dump anything below 50c into. Any bit of change I find around the house while cleaning, emptying out pockets all goes in there. And I generally hate big heavy purses full of coppers so I empty it into the jar every few weeks as well.
Result - bring the lot down to the CoinStar in Tescos on the Wednesday before payday...I can get anything from 20 to 60 euro a go. Nothing to sneeze at when you're down to your last 2 smokes and the only food in the house is noodles!

Course if you counted it yourself, you would have had between 22.22 and 66.66 if you counted it yourself. Or just bought your items in tesco with it!

<---guilty of hoarding small change. I collect it in a large jar and give it to my mum every few months. She then brings it to the bank, who then convert it to notes, which my mum then keeps.

    Last haul was €84 euro.

So in this case, my mum is richer than she thinks...

we filled our change jar when we counted it out we had around €450 in change! :D

throws my change into two jars and trots off every few months to the local centra shop with it's coin counter and cash it all in..
just did it last friday and I had €358.46 :)
Not bad at all...Centra took their 12.5% cut (bout €40) but at least I didnt' have to spend about 3 ****in hours counting it like I used to do.

I do. Dublin bus get them all.

Result? They've just pushed their fare prices up this week.

    Verdict? Fúck the economy.

Richer than I think? I know exactly how little I have. I use change for buses or petty crap and keep the rest in my back pockets..............which eventually cause holes in me pants :pac:

Everytime I look at my wallet and see a decent wad of cash I go: "Nice one! I'll put some of this away and save it for a rainy......."

and then that voice in my head starts talking...

"Well, rent is due tomorrow, the ESB bill will be coming soon as well and since it is the end of the month you better check the letterbox for that UPC bill, too"

    ...........

    crap

I generally throw anything from 1 euro down into a jar and count it every few months when the jar is full. It normally works out about between 150 - 250 euro that I've to get changed to notes.

I think altogether last year I ended up having to change about 700 or 800 euro worth of coins

I tend not to fill my wallet up with coppers. I'm a notes only in the wallet purest.

I do notice that any change I have in my pockets always seems to turn into a ball of 20c by the end of the day.
