    HIR Bulbs
    http://www.finemotoring.com/

Lot of guys on the US BMW forums have switched to these and report excellent results.

    - Fits standard bulb (halogen) fitting
    - Cheaper than Xenons (note real Xenons require a 7,000v pulse start from a dedicated ballast, the blue "Xenon bulbs" you buy on the cheap are junk and not Xenon at all)

Might get some to try out as an alternative to Osram Nightbreakers (which these should easily outperform).

What wattage does the bulb draw? Is it standard (55w)?

Yep, totally standard in that manner. They were apparently designed as a stepping stone to Xenons but the OEM market made the shift faster than the bulb makers got the product out.
