Hi. I just bought a new tv and it has a digital freeview tuner built in. Does that mean i can get free to air irish channels like R.T.E. 1 R.T.E. 2 TV3.
If so, are they supposed to come through on a perfect signal.
Or do i need some other piece of equipment.
Sorry but im a complete muppet when it comes to these things!

    See here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=56 (proper forum)
    and http://www.techtir.ie/saortv/saorview

If it's a UK freeview tuner with no MPEG4, even if HD Ready or Full HD TV it's useless.
If it's a UK "Freeview HD" Tuner or has MPEG4 and HD, then it may be OK.

I was in Curry's yesterday, and all the tv's on display had a big "Freeview" banner on the video that they were showing.

Is that the Saorview? And do you need an aerial?

If it is just the Saorview, then it's not much, is it? Considering Saorview is only the basic Irish Channels, plus the new RTE news channel and Oireachtas Channel, in digital?

Or will there be proper Freeview like in Britain where you get E4, BBC 3, 4 etc?

Kraggy, Freeview is the Brand for FTA Terrestrial TV in UK.
They don't have Irish or French Domestic TV on it.

If there were UK channel on Irish Terrestrial they would be part of a Pay TV package as they are "foreign" TV, not Domestic. Soarview was ever and only ever will be the branding for our own TV channels.

If you want loads of UK TV free you need Freesat, which is separated Branding for most of the UK FTA Satellite channels. Dish and setbox needed, but no subscription.

If there ever are UK channels on Irish Digital Terrestrial (unlikely) then they would have to be paid for by a PayTV company and would likely be Subscription only like UPC cable and MMDS. The UK channels are unlikely to pay the carriage cost in a "foreign" Country and it would be unreasonable for it to double the Licence so you can get it without a sub when 90% of people or more have them already and they are free on Satellite.

    Brilliant reply Watty, thanks.

How much would such a dish and setbox cost? Ballpark.

You should go for Freesat HD, even if you don't have and never want an HDTV.
60cm solid dish in most of Ireland, but 80cm solid dish in far West, North West and SouthWest.

80cm solid dish everywhere if you want Freesat, Astra, Hotbird and Saorsat on same dish.

    See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=155714 for suppliers.

If you are not expert at DIY and don't have a lot of spare time, then buy an installation with the Installer supplying the Freesat HD or Freesat HD PVR system. ISAA installers recommended. But ensure installer has public Liability Insurance, Proper meter (BER and Spectrum, not just signal) and is VAT registered.
