Count me in! ........now to explain to the wife why I'm not painting the downstairs either this weekend(... Thomond for Munster match...G'wan Munster!!) or next weekend!
Nice climb into Ballinspittle ...we went a wee bit of this route on the Rebel Tour... Should be a good spin.

    Gwan Munster!

I think this is replacing the old Midleton-Kinsale charity cycle which always took place on the Saturday of the Bank Holiday. These were always focussed more on the charity side rather than the cycling and you'd get all sorts out - from kids with their parents to old guys on high nellies - they were good fun but frustrating if you were on a road bike because you had to keep on stopping every couple of miles to let everyone catch up into a group to go through the major junctions, roundabouts, etc.
Looks like they're going for a more of a sportive now with different length routes which makes it look a much better option - course looks nice, worth braving the traditionally miserable Bank Holiday weekend weather for!

Heard about it through work and registered online, looks tough without being too much and a good way to start off the winters training.:)

Considered going but the bike isn't the best at the moment. I'm going to go for a short blast keeping the route fairly local before bringing the bike back to the shop that had it in the afternoon.

Lol, Murf had a spin off it and there's something definitely up. It's making a strange noise when cranking the right pedal - as if it's coming from the bottom bracket. It was 'supposed' to have been changed a forthnight ago but someone else collected the bike for me, didn't check, and it's still the same. So rather than get caught out around the Old Head with no way home I'll just stick local for a morning spin before taking the bike back. I'm suspicious if as to whether it was changed at all, and I have been charged for a replacement.

Other than that, the plan was to cycle to Kinsale and head back home instead of doing the Ballincollig - Kinsale leg.

A brand new bike would solve that problem. You should really buy one.

    In fact you need one.

Needs and wants, this is the first time I have come across a situation where some one needed a new bike but didn't want one... you sir need to get your lifes priorities straightned out....

Tomorrow, Saturday will be a cool showery day. Many of the showers will be heavy with a risk of hail and thunder during the afternoon. Temperatures will range 9 to11 degrees and winds will further veer northerly moderate to fresh in strength.

*cough* yea my bike is a bit dodge too.......

@Murf85, What time are you thinking of leaving Glanmire for Kinsale? That option sounds good to me. I wont know for def until later this evening though.

Dont know really...maybe leave glanmire at 8 if not before? Id like to be down there in time to have coffee or something stronger judging by that forecast!

Sunrise last Sat morning was 7.58 and that was on a clear bright morning. If its going to be murky then definitely get some lights on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,952 ✭✭✭funnights74

Me as well seve65,and raingear looks essential judging by the forecast, windy as well :(, not a day for sugarlumps lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Yea, its gonna be wet and cold but if it were easy everyone would be doing it.
It could be the last road outing of 2010 so may as well make it count, p.b.'s all round people.....

See ye all there, though its winter gear for me, afraid the sun loving boards gear will be staying home. Anyone wearing it tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,992 ✭✭✭Plastik

Never made it down from Dublin this evening, so definitely out for tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,565 ✭✭✭thebouldwhacker

Anyone know exactly where the start is? It says the Glen carpark.... never heard of the Glen in Kinsale myself.
    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,952 ✭✭✭funnights74

well did it, tough but not brutal, that hill coming out of inishannon was a leg breaker, saw 2 guys walking up!! and the one after after ballincollig seemed to go on forever,it nearly did me in,weather was kind to us and a good buzz so all in all an enjoyable workout folks:)

It sure did kerryscoob, where did they find that one, chalk it down for the future me thinks...

I wish I could say this was my run but NO,the sons.

Had forgotten about the climb out of Killumney, I felt no pain at that stage just DEAD MAN CYCLING :D.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/54064239

Good event has to be said was a bit lost before we hit Ballincollig, was afraid the food stop was going to be cancelled after the Blarney section was cut, feeling delirious with hunger and exhaustion so was delighted for the good grub, can't fault the event, marshalling and sign posting excellent, plus the weather held up.

A good day, and a well organised event considering it was their first time. As for the route, god, it was hilly, I would even say that it was way harder than the ROK and this event was 40K shorter!
We were lucky that the rain held off, but the wind was very strong and bitterly cold, but I thoroughly enjoyed it none the less.
Hey Kerryscoob, great down hills huh? It makes all the climbing worthwhile.
And BW, cheers for the lift into Ballincollig, greatly appreciated.

The tea/soup/coffee and sandwiches half way round really hit the spot. My only gripe would be that a bit more signage throughout the town directing us to the start point would be good, as nobody was really sure where to go.

A very enjoyable event, organisers very very friendly and helpful. Three good climbs, mere bumps on mapmyride though ! It sure was great to get a bit of sunshine and warmth in the car park at the end !

Nice to put faces to a couple of names, BouldWacker and SignalRabbit.

Very pleased with my own spin, at last I made it through a distance without slowing down and other cyclists flying past (SKT).

Apologies once again to the two guys I was partly responsible for bringing down by not signalling the road sign they crashed into. I say partly because there were two other behind me, but still apologies. I hope they are not too stiff tonight.

Anybody notice we went right past Temple hill, now that would be a killer deviation !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,952 ✭✭✭funnights74

One small gripe was the signage coming into ballincollig was poor but otherwise 5 stars for the organisers, didn't realise we were so close to temple hill seve 65, shock horror if we had to climb that beast, phew close call. Had plenty of lactic acid in my legs thank you!!!

Great to meet the usual suspects and some more boardsies, sorry to kerry and seve for not really chatting to ye much, I was in auto drive I'm afraid and pretty tired by the end.
I must say I really enjoyed the day, fair play to them for putting on a good, thoughtful and well planned event for their first go, great charity and keenly priced, I think Cork has another cycle to be proud of.... They are looking for feed back so go onto the website and let them know, they are talking of putting on another early next year.
While the first 80k were great and I was happy with my cycling the 40k hammerfest back to kinsale was great fun, fantastic...
Now back to the mtb for a few months;)

    Holy zombie thread Batman!
I did a search and this came up, sorry if there's a 2o12 already rocking about.

This be on again tomorrow, who's up for it? Price is up a bit but last years was a bargain. Great cause and a fan-diddly-tastic route. I have cycled this the past two years and it is a great event, and only 1ookm. There is a sad story with this years cycle which adds a second good cause, well worth reading on the website and worth supporting.
