Quick question and one Im being asked myself but not equipped to answer categorically given that I've been out of teaching for a long time.

if you are asked to consider "recent developments" in education before answering a question

just how recent would users of this forum think the developments have to be?

is this basically code for epsen act nowadays or am I way of the mark?

Epsen has not been enacted, are you talking primary or secondary?

    secondary....

its a roadmap though isn't it? points to best practice etc

it would still qualify as one of the most recent developments no?

or does recent developments mean all new legislation (last 6-7) years that is enacted and impinges on teachers/aps/management etc

    tks for reply btw

epsen only effects a certain number of Teachers and Students and the main part of the epsen act isn't in law yet i.e. the IEPs
I would say many different things have had effect on education e.g. ptr change

Is it just legislation you are considering?
    New courses? LCA? JCSP?

I'm not quite sure exactly what your question is.

I think that's my problem as well...I'm not sure what the question is either.

It seems a bit nebulous to be asked to consider "recent developments in education" and for the question not to specify how recent or if they are just legislative developments, or curriculum changes or new courses or all etc

I suppose what I'm looking for is what the good posters of this forum would consider the "recent developments in education" to actually be so I can look somewhat informed when I try to help answer my friends question!

tks though..hadn't thought of new courses..I would consider them to be recent developments myself

I would start at the most recent and work my way back:

    Cuts due to recession:

    PTR
    embargo on posts of responsibility
no post holder allowed to 'act up' if another postholder is on leave
    cuts to funding
    book grant cut
    courses cut
    Special classes cut
    SNA jobs lost
Language Teachers of Foreign Pupils posts lost
    In-service for teachers cut back
Schools not being built / renovated

    Legislation:

VEC to take over some primary schools
    Epsen Act still on shelf
    Teaching Council Act
Teaching Council to take over probation of teachers in 2 years
Legislation passed to allow payment to non-qualified teachers

    Croke Park Agreement

    TUI not in - implications????
    work extra hour per week
    Pension Levy
    Public service levy
    moral among teachers
all of these affect moral & outlooks

    etc. etc. etc.

I think they just want to see that your aware of what's happening in education & the effects / implications

Id say pick 2 from JR's legislative column (pretty good list, I could just do 5!!) learn off a spiel and be passionate and positive about them.

The other 2; i.e. cutbacks and croke park agreement, I reckon are issues for unions and pubtalk and not for an interview with managers and the like who want to know the positives rather than the problems.
