Another Recommend me a Car Thread

Hi Guys

Looking at trading in my 01 Ford Focus for a newer motor and am looking for suggestions.
I would like to spend no more than 15k but could push it towards 20k for right car.

I had been thinking of a Volvo S40 but having 2nd thoughts after reading thread here about them and also VW Passat. Looked at a pre-reg 10 VW Jetta the other day as the dealer had no Passats and they were nice enough but it was more than I ideally want to spend.

Requirements are low tax, low mileage, good fuel economy, big boot space (for my golf clubs ) and no 3 door cars.

I would not bother with the Jetta, they are about to be replaced by a new model soon enough so existing ones will sink like a stone in value.

It's going to get mentioned so it might as well be from me but have you looked at the Skoda Octavia? If you are not doing big mileage then the 1.2 TSi model should be worth a look at. It still only costs €156 to tax and is good enough for urban trips.

BTW I would try and sell the Focus privately if it is in decent shape, you will get a bit more for it than the trade-in value and it will allow you to negotiate a better straight deal on the new car.

I should have said, I drive up and down to Donegal from Dublin about twice a month, so do a fair bit of driving.
My mate bought a 07 Skoda Octavia VRS and its a lovely car and I have looked at them and will consider but just want to see what else is out there.

I wouldn't recommend that car with that engine.

The 1.8Tdci is a shocking drive, and can be fairly dangerous until you figure out how to avoid the gaping flat spot of torque.

2.0Tdci is a decent motor, but very few around as everyone went for the cheaper 1.8

If you need a big boot, dont bother considering the S40. My clubs have to sit diagonally in the boot- they won't fit length- or width-ways.
On the plus side, its comfortable and well specced, and suffers from horrific depreciation so it's nice used buy.

As regards the Skoda VRS, not many of them on sale 2008/2009 years, so easier said than done!
