used bark mulch last year in calving pens for suckler cows with a small mix of straw, worked fine for this. dont think i suit well for loose housing for cattle as the dung needs water to get washed in, have a small pad outside, the mulch works very well and the animals are happy :):)

we had wood chip in a loose shed last winter we put it around the feeding area and had the rest of the shed bedded in peat,
i was hoping the solid standing of the wood chip would stay cleaner and not turn into a mess,
this did not work as planned as the cattle were dragging up the peat on to the chip and it was making a soggy mess on the top, but the chip was fine underneath
If you have an old grub and an area to let the cattle out onto, you could keep going in and stirring it up once or twice a week, to keep it freshend up, its worth a try but it might be no harm having some straw as back up, you could put it on top of the chip if it does not work out
