    Hi,

Looking to buy a new laptop this week. My requirements are as follow:

    1. Travel a lot so not too bulky. Ideally 14" screen or smaller but with a high resolution.

    2. Use a lot of Programming software which is pretty memory intensive so lots of ram is a must.

    3. Good battery life :)

    Thats it really.

    Anyone suggest one for me?

I ordered a Dell Inspiron M301z the other day, hasnt arrived yet so cant really comment on it .

    But,

it has option of 4GB RAM, 500GB HD and has a 13"screen.

looks like a good laptop anyways :)

    Sony Vaio Z series.

Fully customisable Ultraportable that offers up to : 1920 x 1080 screen, 4 RAID SSDs, i7 Quad core processor, 8gb RAM life, Blu-ray

Combined with 6hours battery, a form factor of ~ 1inch, weight of 1.5kg, carbon fibre build quality to match a tank and sexy looks, it is simply THE best laptop in its class.

    Possible negatives:

    - Yet to offer USB 3.0
    - The 330m is a little on the weak side for gaming at full HD resolution.
    - Price! However your budget will get you a lower specced version.

Cheaper alternative would be the much cheaper Acer Timeline X 3820TG but comes with 700p resolution and is very hard to locate with the HD 5650 GPU over here (models here only offer the 5470 low end GPU). Or the HP Envy 14 with Radience Screen but as HP arent offering the full HD screen anymore these models are selling out like goldust.

Personally, if you are not in a hurry I would consider waiting until early next year when the new sandy bridge i-series cpus are released.
These promise to give ~20% performance gains, significant temperature and battery life increases, a massive boost to the ergonomics of quad core processors, USB 3.0 and SATA III support, and intergrated GPUs on equivalent of low-end dedicated GPUs such as 5470/310M.
Combined with 6000 series of ATI GPUs, there are going to be some very tempting models released in Q1-Q2 of 2011, of which i suspect a new sony series will be a forerunner.
