Anyone have suggestions for a wireless modem/router replacement for the eircom zyxel one .

I saw a netgear dg834 v2 in pcworld today for €80 but I don't know enough about this subject .

I want to keep it around the €50 mark if I can as that is all I have to spend .

If you're happy enough with the Netgear then just search for DG834 on eBay and there's a good selection there.

You can also get them new online for about €50-55 plus delivery.

I had that modem and i wasn't impressed, had issues with my bb speed, and wireless range.
replaced it with a Buffalo, got it in argos... think it was about 50/60 euro can't remember. but it's the best modem i ever had, no problems now.

    Big bump.
I am in the same boat with the Zyxel. Very poor range etc. Eircom have not put the new cables down (Cornelscourt) so some of the fault might be with that as max broadband speed not great.
Looking to get a decent modne with built in software to limit access on a device by device basis (mac address based). The idea is so a teenager is not on Facebook all night (or worse!). Current modem does not work well with TPLink and OpenDNS.
Anyway, looking into a new modem but want one that will work with both Eircom and UPC (may switch when new line comes in) and has all the bells and whistles for working with OpenDNS, Mac filtering/timing and TPLink.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    big bump indeed
i wont recommend a specific router as there are many good and cheap options out there...
-look out for the ability to allow access by time of day (for your teenager)
-i cant imagine any router not working with your upc/eircom modem once you have it switched to bridge mode
-range will be tricky. dont expect a big increase here. best option is to move the current router even slightly (ie fix to the wall 3 feet up rather that have on the floor)

You want a decent router, not a modem. Modems are service specific, so one for eircom is useless for UPC and vice versa. Buy a router and bridge whatever your ISP of choice give you. There a hundreds of good choices out there, you can do your own research as to what router suits you best.
