Warwickshire’s Director of Cricket Ashley Giles completed another significant signing today following confirmation that 26 year old Irish team captain William Porterfield has made the move from Gloucestershire to the Bears on a three year deal. Porterfield has to date 44 One-day Internationals and 17 International T20’s to his name for Ireland, so has plenty to offer at the top of the order and will add depth to a Warwickshire line-up already enhanced by the recent signing of Younus Khan as overseas player for the next two seasons.
Ashley Giles commented that, “This has been a good week for the Bears, having completed the signing of two very high class batsmen to our squad for next season.”
“William has proved his potential at International and domestic level and I believe he has a great deal more to offer.”
William commented on signing for the club, “ I am extremely excited to be joining the Bears. It’s a club with a great history and I’m looking forward to playing a significant part in their future success.”
Porterfield will be joining his Irish team mate Boyd Rankin, who is currently side-lined with a foot injury, at Warwickshire.
It is believed that Porterfield rejected approaches from Surrey, Middlesex, Sussex and Nottinghamshire before opting for a move to Edgbaston.

Happy days! The Bears batting needs a serious kick up the arse after last season so this is a great opportunity for him to make a name for himself. I think hell do well at Warwickshire to be honest; and given the shambles last season was in the 4 day game, Id expect him to get his chance.

+1 to that. It was a right dogged 50 that he got against Warwickshire in Belfast in 2008, which won Ireland the match. He won't be doing that again :)
