Thinking of swapping my 2L car for a 2.2L van, anyone know the annual tax of van?

    Commercial tax.

Not sure of exact figure but 280 springs to mind for some reason. But you need to be vat registered and sign a declaration of commerical use only I think these days.

Oh of course if it's privatly taxed I think it's done at the same rate for a car in it's engine class for pre 2008 :)

2.2 is either a 823 or 860 depending on which side of the 2.2 you fall on :)

you don't need to be vat registered or to sign a declaration.

If it's commercial tax I thought you did?

The brother was told he needed a vat number and was given a form to be signed by him and stamped by a guard...

So he taxed privatly as it was a small engine van so only a few quid extra and he wasn't registered as it wasn't really for commercial use. Just for heading to dumps and for bringing dogs to vets etc

That's actually funny, but it doesn't say in any official document's that it's commerial tax.
    It's called "Goods vehicles tax".
I just think there must be some trick that say that goods vehicles can be only used for commercial purposes. But I didn't find it yet anywhere

Environment Minister John Gormley has ordered local authorities to force drivers of commercial 4X4s and small vans to legally declare that they will not use them for any social, domestic or pleasure purposes.

I'll see if I can find a link to a goverment source but that pretty much sums it up that you have to declare it won't be used for social, domestic or pleasure purposes. So if you get caught after signing a declaration you will face fine I imagine. Perhaps a goods vehicle driver can clear up the matter, I only have a private hatchback. I'm just going on what I read and am told & what I see.

    Edit to add link above

Its a pity there is no way around it.:) not paying that tax for a van. That kind of makes my mind up as i didnt really want to get rid of car!

Well there is ways around it if you try really hard but I don't think I could pass that kind of information on boards publically. It's not illegal but I think I will refrain as I don't want a ban or infraction as I have enough common sense that it may not be allowed to be posted.

Here's a direct link to the goods only declaration form btw

    www.kerrycoco.ie/en/allservices/motortax/onlineforms/thefile,1430,en.doc

This needs to be signed in full by yourself & stamped by a member of AGS / tax staff. Either way if you buy a pint of milk you can be stopped and fined technically. So I think that there is the trick your looking for CiniO?

honestly that sall nonsense. you do not have to registered for Vat. ot sign a declaration. it was a slow week in news when they were taling about a signed declaration. it came from the department of enviorment and was an internal memo on stuff they were taling about 10 years ago. noticed how they all shut up when they saw the reaction.
