    Ask him the password.

Otherwise you will probably have to unplug the CMOS battery from the motherboard, which usually involves taking the laptop apart.

Power the laptop down. Disconnect the power supply and battery then reconnect the battery and the power supply.
Start it up and do you see a screen with bios or startup options with "F2" and "F10" ?

When you type in the wrong password it should display an error with a mix of number and letter under it. What is it displaying?

more than you. What a surprise.
They can access USB and boot from an external hard drive.

Please try and add something to the discussion next time duckyenglish.

Unplugging the power and taking the battery out isn't going to reset your bios settings though, you'll still need to take it apart for that!

Then again, I'm not even sure if this "HDD password" is anything to do with the BIOS - I'd say waiting for your friend to get back to you is the best bet...

Wrong kid, you reset your computer back to it's startup conditions.
And you have not answered my USB startup options question ?

goodman "they can access USB and boot from an external hard drive."???

that still won't solve the hd password ? and i don't think the op will load an os on an extenal drive , but i may be wrong , and you should learn some manners.

cheers thanks for your insightful technical help,-: edit i see you work for pc world we are in safe hands with you , disconnect the battery and power that will solve all issues . Have a nice day.

    WTF are you on about??

The problem that the OP is having is that the original owner set a hard drive password which has nothing got to do with the the laptops bios. If they take out the hard dive and install it in another laptop or put it into an external caddy it will still look for the "primary master HHD user password" as it is set /locked on the hard drive and not the laptops bios.

There are ways around this but nothing remotely related to what you are suggesting.

    OP,

This code is the checksum HASH of the password.

If you tell me the error code, make and model of the laptop I can tell you what the password is!!!!!!!

Had the same problem recently with a SSD HDD but some drives store the Password in on the drive itself on an embedded chip and if that's the case here you won't be able to do anything . If your drive isn't as up to date as the ones I've just talked about you could try plug it in as a USB a run a Linux live Cd and see can't you mount it from that and format it and reinstall . It's worth a try . If it's giving out a sumcheck error write down and give it to bacon zombie ??

    Hi BaconZombie,

I've just had this issue on an old laptop I use for streaming. It's never happened before, although I did a reinstall before xmas.

    It's a Dell Inspiron 8500 with XP. The message is : #***********-595B.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Michael

    Thanks syco,

I think I managed to extract the password but in the meantime the laptop rebooted on it's own! I'm back up and running anyway.
