    Hi all,

Does anybody know when the entry forms will be available for this years race? It's long been a goal of mine but I've missed out for the last two years.

think it usually opens end of October but keep an eye on their website as the date will be published there......

Normally end of November is the application time. Usually you can post in a stamped addressed envelope up to late november requesting an application form be posted to you. End of november they post out the application forms to people who sent in SAE's, intending they arrive to people on a monday and put the form on the internet that evening (the intention is that all the people who took the time to send off an SAE will have already got it filled out and away in the post before the form appears on teh website but this never works properly as a lot of people don't get the forms in the post until the tuesday or wednesday). Normally the entry limit fills up usually by the thursday. If you are a member of a AAI club you normally are guaranteed entry if you form arrives in by mid november december. In the past if you ran all 4 races of the ballycotton 5 mile summer series you also got in so long as your form arrived in by mid november december. I'd assume they'll run with this criteria again this year.

I expect details and the procedure will be posted on the website very soon.

A significant typo there. If you are a member of an AAI club, you are guaranteed entry if you have your form in just after the normal closing date (about a week's extension to the main date) - which makes it sometime in the second week in December.

Actually its ON or BEFORE the official closing date. No exceptions, unless you're a genuine elite.

    Edit:
Last year, the forms came out on a Monday and the first 2,500 entries, irrespective of whether they were AAI members or not, were received by the Thursday morning. Even then not all entries received on the Thursday were accepted - it was strictly limited to the first 2,500. After that entries were accepted from AAI members up to the closing date, which was (I think) the Friday week after the forms came out.

..and...btw...every year, people drive down to Ballycotton on the final day (and afterwards) to drop their entry in the letterbox. Doesn't work! ALL entries MUST be POSTED - No exceptions!

....and every year people bitch like mad that the procedure is too strict. You've been warned! Get your form in on time!

Agreed - Every year people moan that they couldn't get in and they really want to get in, and its the only race they want to do and they really really want to do it.
If that is the case then get your entry in as early as you can.

    It really is that simple

If you want to do the race and it means everything to you, then you should know that it fills up quickly, and so you need to keep an eye on the website and send your entry off on the Monday or the Tuesday.

Might be an idea to put your work address as the address on the SAE if your post usuallyarrives during the day...that way the form will arrive to you at work on the Monday and you'll be able to drop it back in the post same day.

Last year there was a problem with the entry forms that were posted out to those who has sent in an s.a.e. beforehand. Apparently two boxes were delivered on the Friday and only one was sorted - the second was, for some unexplained reason, held over for sorting until the Monday, so there were a lot of disgruntled punters. I'd expect that this problem will be addressed this year.

You're much better off getting the entry form off their website as soon as it becomes available. After all, anyone who has access to boards will have access to that site as well.

Nope! Postal system still works (usually) in 2010.

This race can only cater for a limited number of runners. There is one road into Ballycotton and the same one out. Parking is limited - people have to be bussed in from car parks miles away. This is NOT your average race. They are geared for about 2,200 to 2,400 finishers and don't really want more than that, largely on safety grounds.

    ....so postal...If you don't like that...write to them!! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 335 ✭✭petermijackson

Is it not easier to manage a quota of numbers with online entry?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,550 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

There's a good chance that anyone who goes to the trouble of sending in a postal application will also go and do the race. Not necessarily the case with the online entrants, so lots more wasted entries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭Condo131

Entry for Ballycotton was €15 last time out. The event is run very tightly.....literally on a shoe-string! Changing to on-line entry would involve additional costs, to both the entrant and the organisers, forcing an increase in the entry fee - something Ballycotton are always loath to do.

Compare what you get in Ballycotton for €15 with other races where anything from €25 to €65 is charged. There is a hell of a difference. Imho Ballycotton wins hands down!

......meantime make sure you have a stamp available early in December....I don't think you can get them on-line either :D

is there a seperate entry to the munster 10m series? or do you just arrive on the day or pre-register for those?

Ballycotton 10 mile - as above. Usually around 2500 runners.

Mallow 10 mile - online entry available beforehand, but (more than likely) registration available on morning of race. Usually around 600 runners.

Dungarvan 10 mile - pre-registration ONLY. Usually around 1000 runners.

Kilnaboy 10 mile - registration availabe on the day. Usually around 300 runers.

Does returning an unused timing Chip from the previous Ballycotton 10 race give the enterant preferential registration treatment ?

You mean 'does highlighting the fact that a previous entry was wasted, denying somebody else the opportunity to run, and not returning the chip as instructed, thereby costing the organizers additional costs give the non-runner preferential registration treatment'? I doubt it. ;)

I thought if you couldn't run the race and you sent back your timing chart within a specified time frame you would get an entry into next years race. But you had to send back the timing chip the day you got it not a month or two afterwards.

This is the facebook appreciation site for ballycotton10- A good place to start when looking for clues as to when/how reg will open, as it's been set up by one of the organisers..

Don't think so... looking on the website they say the chips are disposable and entrants were to "Please keep them as souvenirs."

AFAIK this was the case one year but since they moved to the disposable chip it is not the case..

So if you get injured between entry and race day then your entry goes unused as you are not allowed to transfer the number..... plus organisers know a percentage will not make the start line and work the money that way...

    http://www.ballycottonrunning.com/files/2011%20Entry%20Procedure.htm

    BALLYCOTTON ‘10’ 2011 ENTRY PROCEDURE
    *
The entry procedure for the 2011 race (to take place on Sunday March 6th) is as follows:
    *
    1) People can apply for forms from now up until Friday November 26th by sending a SAE to: Ballycotton Running Promotions, Ballycotton, Co Cork (see note below).

    2) All forms will then be posted out on Monday November 29th - ideally to arrive with applicants by the following day (Tuesday).

    3) The entry form will be put up on the website www.ballycottonrunning.com on Tuesday evening (Nov 30th), also in John Buckley Sports (Cork), Ger Wyley Sports (Dungarvan) and local shops in Ballycotton and Shanagarry that same afternoon.

    4) The first 2,500 postal entries opened will be automatically accepted – regardless of who they are.*

    5) Entries for the following will be accepted by post up to and including Thursday December 16th:
    (a) All bona fide AAI (Athletics Ireland) registered club members.
    (b) All runners who completed the 2010 Ballycotton Summer Road Race Series (all four 5-mile events).

    6) All bona fide overseas entrants accepted by post up and including Monday January 10th.

    7) As usual, a limited number of elite athletes will be accepted up to near race day.
    *
REMEMBER - When applying for forms, please enclose a large (A4) SAE with the correct postage, stating the number of forms required. If more than one form is going to the same address (two or three members of the same family, etc) one envelope is sufficient.
    *
If the correct postage is not on the envelope we cannot be held responsible for postal delays. Also, we prefer people to enter on the official form, so ask for enough of forms – there is no need to photo-copy.
    *

Saw this message posted on the website

    "Thursday December 2nd, 11pm

    IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Please refrain from sending any more entries for the Ballycotton ‘10’ UNLESS you qualify through the AAI club, Summer Series or overseas system (this procedure is detailed on the entry form and also on the website)."

Does that mean they have already reached 2,500 postal entries?

Sure sounds like it. Fingers crossed. Of course if you're a member of Boards AC (an AAI affiliated club!) you can continue to submit entries.

Yes! A day earlier than last year. Not everyone, whose entry was received on the 4th day last year, got in. This year, it's moved up a day ....and probably not everyone whose entry was received on Thursday will have got in.

As Krusty say, anyone who is a member of an AAI club, or who ran all four of the Ballycotton 5 Summer Series, can still enter right up until Thursday Dec 16th!!

So if you're not already a member of an AAI club, and REALLY want to get in.....Join a club!!! You'll find a list of AAI club contacts here, or an interactive map here......you can find one membership form here.:D:D

As a matter of interest when/how do you find out if you're in? Think I posted my entry in time but you never know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭Condo131

if you're a member of an AAI club and put it down on the form, then you can take it that you're in. If you're not in an AAI club, either your cheque will (eventually) be cashed or you will get a letter in the post telling you that you're not in.

Got it from a VERY reliable source that the full 2,500 accepted entries are already in the computer and are currently being proof read. They list should be up on the Ballycotton site in a day or two.

Don't forget that AAI clubmembers can still enter up to this day week...BUT remember to put your club down on the form.....many people have forgotten and left that section blank.

I think krusty is a little worried as Ballycotton doesn't seem to recognise boards ac as an aai club or at least boards ac has not appeared in previous results when members have registered.

My club is Dublin for 2009
