    Hi folks,

I bought a 1979 camper from a bloke who imports them from america. The van was built in 1979 but wasn't first registered untill 1980. I went to the vrt office and everything went grand. The bloke in the vrt office was very helpfull and I thought I had persuaded him to register it as a 1979 van.
I went through the engineers report, got it insured and taxed, and then I got the log book in and it was down as a 1980 van (bxxtard).

My question is, do I have to get an nct/doe done on the van before I have to tax it next year and then do I have to get it done every year after that?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi tattoo,

The camper van don't get any nct or doe. There is some thought about this, you can look in the camper van section under motoring.

Basically your van is good to go, the tax which might apply is campervan and not classic but I am not so sure about it.

The engineer report is the nct equivalent and it is a one's off. :D

if you get evidence from the relelvant Club or manufacturere that it was built in 1979, then it will be NCT exempt anyway.

Check your m-plate, it will give the exact date of manufacture -

If necessary you can apply to VW for a birth cert confirming this build date.

thats not what i was told

The Road Safety Authority has contracted Applus+ to take over the provision of the National Car Testing Service from 2010 to 2019. The new contract commenced on 4 January 2010. In the interests of road safety, a number of new testing items are being introduced from April 2010 and annual testing of vehicles over 10 years old is being introduced from June 2011.
The new NCT Regulations, S.I. No 567 of 2009 - Road Traffic (National Car Test) Regulations 2009, which came into force on 4 January 2010, have changed the previous arrangement relating to cars over 30 years old. Prior to 4 January, cars over 30 years old were exempt from testing. Since 4 January, cars registered prior to 1 January 1980 continue to be exempt from testing, however, cars registered on or after 1 January 1980 are subject to testing. Therefore, vehicles registered after 1 January 1980 will continue to be required to be tested even after they are 30 years old.

that was in response to a spefic question on build date or reg date being the decider
i would be interested in getting a 1980 car exempted (it was regged on 01-01-1980 so it was clear that it had been built prior to that date but no joy so far.
