Transit Through Australia

G'Day... I was deported from Oz in 2005 after a 1 year prison term. I am looking at travelling to LA in November and looks like the cheapest route is transit through Brisbane or Sydney. Does anyone know what the general rules are for a 3 - 6 hour stopover if I'm not planning on leaving the terminal? Do I need to apply for a transit visa if I am NZ citizen?
Cheers - put another shremp on th barbie mate and we'll cook a burra or 2!

    Not too difficult to google:
    http://www.immi.gov.au/visitors/transit/no-visa.htm

Some travellers do not need a transit visa if they:

    * depart Australia by air within 8 hours of the scheduled time of their arrival
    * hold confirmed onward booking and documentation necessary to enter the country of their destination
    and
    * remain in the transit lounge at an airport.

Citizens of the these countries: ..... New Zealand

And the Oz Immigration site but find that one yet - thanks for the pointer! It doesn't actually mention anything about convictions and I was told when deported that if I landed on Australian soil again I would be arrested - which is why I want to know if this includes transit as, obviously, my name will be flagged as a 'person of interest'.

Have you, or any children included in this application, ever:
If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of the above questions, you must state who
it applies to and give ALL relevant details.
If the matter relates to a criminal conviction, please give the nature of
the offence, full details of sentence and dates of any period of
    imprisonment or other detention.

    • been removed or deported from any country
    (including Australia)?

well reading the info you don't need to apply for the transit visa .... but then again you simply might not be allowed in ... I would say maybe ring a consulate or immigration as that situation doesn't appear to be covered

Perhaps he holds Dual Citizenship of the United States and New Zealand. I know a girl who has an American Mother, Australian Father and was born in England and is now married to an Irish guy herself. She has 4 passports Irish, Aussie, American and British. :D

I would contact your closest Australian Embassy or Consulate and find out where you stand. Ask for their advice in writing.
