Breeding Springer Spaniel Bitch

I hope that i am in the correct section for this thread.

My English Springer bitch is 6 years old and I have never seen her on heat. I don't have any other dog nor are there any loose dogs in the area to attract if she has been on heat so I have never noticed her on heat and I would love to get one clutch of pups from her.

Question is, can you artificially bring a dog on heat (I am a farmer and I do this to both Cows and sheep from time to time). Does anyone have any experience whether this can be done or not?

second question, a lad told me lately that it is good to breed a bitch at least once in their life as it helps prevent cancer?? or some other illnesses in the dog?

    all advice appreciated.

A shooting buddy of mine had the same problem with an 8 year old gsp bitch who never fully came in to heat for him. My bitch was on her first heat cycle at about a year old and we were running the 2 dogs a lot together for the month she was in heat and his bitch ended up coming into heat heavy the following month and he got the 2 pups he was looking for from that! My 2 bitches come into heat every 6 months one month apart. I never heard of artificially bringing them on best thing is to give the vet a buzz! I heard that story to about it been good and asked the vet about it, he said thats absolute rubbish that if you get them spayed before their first heat cycle they have something like an 80% reduced risk of getting some common cancer in bitches!
