What's in a name?

It started off as “The European Economic Community” (EEC), from which one could infer it was all about money and business.

Then it became “The European Community“ (EC), which suggested a people-based organization. I was happy with that one, but it didn’t last long.

Now it’s “The European Union” (EU), which suggests some shift in its aims, although I realise it was originally formed to make wars between the member nations impossible.

Where will it take us tomorrow?

Wherever the countries, of which it consists, decide to let it take us.

Possibly Confederation they sure do like to change the name a lot.

Actually it started with the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951. Very good visual guide here.

Thing is the EU isn't really a change of name but the merging of three different bodies into the one organisation. That link above will lead you to all the information of these bodies which are referred to the three pillars of the EU.

The "Federal Republic of the Minor Planets of the Solar System" is the current favourite for the next name change. It leaves plenty of room for future expansion... :)
