Found out today that I am being made redundent from my job in the IT sector along with six other people. Getting statutory package, seven years there

Not looking for any sympathy here. I am lucky in one respect that I dont have a mortgage or kids, at the same time I dont want to leave Ireland as my dad is ill and I wouldnt feel right going away

Just wondering how others coping with this news ?

Yeah me too. One weeks pay in lieu of notice. Phone call saying don't come in. after all the service I've given I would have appreciated at least some warning.
Not the end of the world though, and a positive attitude carries me far. I'm going kayaking instead today

Like a lamb eh? (couldn't resist).

But seriously, sorry to hear that.

Happened to me a 18 months ago too. Had to be let go as a small Irish IT company who couldn't make ends meet. It was tough, but I understood. So after a full year of being on the dole and trying my hardest to get anything and everything I finally got back on my feet.

It'll be tough for the first few months, but keep at it. Or this could be a blessing in disguise......Change of scenery, that sort.

    First rule: Don't panic !

Secondly, remind yourself ...it could be worse (as you said yourself ...no mortgage, no kids)

Thirdly ...get busy looking for another job. Overhaul your CV, study the ads, customise your CV to the advertised jobs.

    Again ...don't panic!

It's bad out there, but not completely desperate, you'll find something else.

    sorry to read that OP.

7 years service is a good stint with your company.
Not very nice that you're only going to receive statutory redundancy given that length of service.

Small consolation is the fact that there are literally thousands of other people in the same situation as you.

The thing is to try to remain positive and look on this as an opportunity to take another direction in life and to try to maximise this time to your benefit.

Happened to me twice since 2004, OP but was lucky enough to get sorted again quickly both times.

If you have no kids/mortgage, take a little time off and chill. The IT market isn't as bad as other fields if you have experience.

    Best of luck!

    Hard luck mate.

    Things to do:
    > Send in forms to Revenue to get some tax back
    > Sign on at earliest opportunity (tomorrow)
    > Get your cheque and paperwork (especially P45) as soon as you can.

    Then:
    > Make three plans (with budgets)
    (1) "What if I am off work for 3 months?"
    (2) "What if I am off work for 6 months?"
    (3) "What if I am off work for 12 months?"

    Then:
    > If you have company paid health insurance, find out when it stops, and take it over yourself if you have to.

    Then:
    > Check your CC and Loan agreements to see if you are entitled to any payment protection insurance

    Then:
    > Get your linkedin profile up and running and up to date
    > Make a list of leads for new jobs
    > Update CV

    Then:
    > Keep a record of every job you apply for, who you sent it to, what date, date of response, version of CV sent, etc. This is really critical. After 3 days I had sent 40 CVs and was starting to lose track (except I had spreadsheet in place).
    > Realise that recruitment agencies will tell you anything to get on your books. Trust your own instincts, but strike while the iron is hot.

Good luck. I was in the same boat a year ago. Now I'm back at work, out of Ireland and have two more kids!

FFS stupid shi*e country, sorry to hear you lost the job, at least like you and others have pointed out no mortgage or kids to make the burden worse.

Reading through previous posts there is some good advice in them so follow it, funny though how one or two posted clear plans which no doubt involve some work but are what one needs when faced with no job, so its great to see that kind of a plan, but surely our government could sit down and draw up a plan and put in the work and somehow drag us out of this!

as some one said 'dont panic' . make sure that you will get moneys your owed, holidays etc,, look at this as time to spend with your sick parent, my hubbie was laid of in june this year, this was his first summer ever being off cos he was flat out working. we even went away for a few days down south for summer break, we had a ball cos we would have never gone cos of his work, yes he does miss his job but he keeps in contact with mates he made friends with when working. you could join these job.ie alert that are online. wish you all the best op

I'd recommend recruitireland.ie and irishjobs.ie, there is some over lap but they seem to be the better sites. If your going to use agencies, I'd suggest only using one. Listen to friends and colleagues experiences with different agencies and choose which one sounds best. The IT industry has picked up so it shouldn't take you too long to get a new role - especially if your in and around Dublin.

I was in the same boat last April - small IT consultancy firm - made redundant after the biggest client pulled the plug.

I took the summer off. Gardened, went fishing, in fact did all the things I wanted to do including a leisurely trip in the US.

Decided last month I should get back to work and the first interview I did
,got myself a six month contract.

So, don't worry - use your redundancy wisely - treat the next two weeks
as a holiday, then re-skill, refocus and there is a job out there for you.

Use your network, there are plenty of jobs in IT at the moment - no
    recession here.

Is that what you did when you lost your job or did you start taking them instead.

There is a good few IT jobs out there, so give yourself 6 months and you have a job for sure. I got let go in IT at peak of recession and had a job within 3 months, and turned down another 2.

Chin up and you will find one soon

Happened to myself earlier this year. 2nd time i've been made redundant.
Like someone said, get all your paperwork and Social Welfare sorted asap cos you are going to be waiting weeks for it to be processed.
Hope you won't be too long waiting for a job!

Sorry to hear about that, same thing happened to me when I was working as an IT Techie and got laid off with a few others.

Unlike you, though, I didn't have 7 years with the crowd I worked with so that will be at least beneficial to ya. Just get your affairs in order early on so you don't fall into that easy habit of doing nothing for months.

But first, grab that redundancy cheque and paint the town red with your vomit! :pac:

Plus, since you're being laid off I recommend you piss into the canteen kettle to teach them some manners!.................though that might hamper your reference somewhat.

OP same boat at the start of last summer within the IT sector. Except I had a mortgage and no redundancy entitlements as not with the company long enough.

Had mortgage protection and savings though so took the summer off, decided to upskill in areas I was interested in getting into instead of going for the first thing that came up at a reduced salary.

Don't whatever you do be bullied into accepting a role by agencies. Got so much doom and gloom reports from them last year, and was told I was living in a dreamworld and would need to take a pay cut as well as take whatever was available and should feel lucky to be getting it. After a couple of weeks took my cv down and only put it back up when I had enough of holidaying at home and felt I'd updated my skills to be confident going for roles that required them.

After a couple of weeks and around 5 interviews got my first contract.

Been contracting since and love it! :)

/Edit: As others have said make sure to register with social welfare asap. I registered within 3 days and still took 6 weeks before I got anything.

My classiness is matched only by the enormity of my sense of humour.
And yes, I am pretty too.

The man lost his job, not his ability to laugh. You'd think that at a time like this a laugh would be what he needs.
Do you really think he posted in AH just for sympathody?

I'd think that at this time a job is what he needs, actually.

I was thinking I might run for the Dail in the forthcoming election. The pay is great and the benefits are absolutely amazing :D
I'll run as an independent in some god forsaken place on a 'bankers are ****' ticket and then 'do a deal' with some party who needs the vote

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,273 ✭✭✭Morlar

OP - I would agree with the 'keep a spreadsheet of jobs applied and cv's used' idea. I have seen people made redundant who slip into becoming socially isolated so that may be something else to look out for.
