Work on the side

Is there anyone in full time employment who do seperate work on the side?

I work in practice and am a part qualified CPA (1 exam left), so as you could imagine the money is pathetic.

Was thinking of putting an ad into the local monthly advertiser, as i've noticed that there are no ads in it relating to accountants/bookkeeping services and it goes out to a fairly large population.

I would be offering the basics, ie Vat returns, Payroll/PAYE returns, general bookkeeping services, accounts prep etc.

So does anyone know if there is a market out there for this? I was thinking of putting the catchphrase "Is your accountant charging you too much?" and then listing what services i'd offer. Any other ideas would be welcomed also!

i think your employer may have something in the contract you signed originally. If you have a copy lying around check it out as you maybe in breach of same

I never signed a contract where i work now. Plus where i work and where i'm from are different areas so i wouldn't be taking any clients off them

if thats the case then i would suggest discussing with your employer. as long as your employer feels it wont interfere with your performance within your current role then i would suggest they wouldnt have a problem with it.

I'd check with the CPA to see what they deem to be public practice, you could be leaving yourself wide open.

Vat returns, Payroll/PAYE returns, general bookkeeping services and accounting to Trial balance stage would not be considered public practice. Just steer clear of income tax or corporation tax preparations and tax/accounting advice and you should be fine.

To be honest I wouldn't check with your employer. If you can get the work and have time to do it, go for it!

I'd avoid the phrase "Is your accountant charging you too much?" because it would appear you are providing accountancy services.. which is public practice (and you are part qualified without a practicing cert). You cannot imply that you are an accountant.

You'd also be implying other accountants are charging too much by referring to the pricing like this.. check up the advertising rules set out by your accounting body and you'll probably see you cannot advertise your services in this way. There is nothing stopping you from saying you are available for book-keeping, and what you are able to provide.
