I've had the disconcerting experience of some-one knowing exactly where I am, different days of the week.
We are in seperate counties, he has an iphone. Is there a new tracker thing that lets you track people's mobiles? there must be, as I've no idea how he would know where I am otherwise?

No, definitely not. It might be possible if you both had iPhones but given the obvious privacy concerns, you'd definitely know about an App on your phone notifying others of your location.

Do you both have iPhones? Do you share a MobileMe account?

Do you use any apps like Twitter, Foursquare, Gowalla?

For a tracker to work you have to give permission on your device. Look in Location Services, see what apps are using your location.

In an ideal world - yes I know you should have to accept something before it tracks you.
But I googled it and there are people saying there are ways of doing it without people's permission, with just a mobile number. I'm not trusting anything anymore!

I don't have any apps on my phone, it's not an iphone/android phone.

No, I have a sony erricson phone from last year, I have an ipod touch for all my apps and things so don't use a phone for that stuff, I don't understand it!

Technically that's true. But that information is not revealed publicly, so anyone being able to do so without a court order and a damned good reason is nonsense.

No, not really. Someone would need low-level access to the network operator's hardware and information in order to triangulate your position based on your phone number. Even this isn't 100% accurate, it's dependent on a whole pile of factors. It also requires a lot of data sifting and calculation. In short, there is zero chance whatsoever that someone has an app that will allow them to locate you based on your phone number.

There are hundreds of "friend finder" apps on the iPhone (and all other GPS-enabled phones) where you stick in someone's phone number and their current location appears on the screen of the phone. These don't work. What happens is you walk up to a friend and say, "My iPhone can track you". So you stick in their mobile number and the iPhone finds itself. Of course, since the friend is standing beside you, it looks like it's found your friend.
