Mac battery fluctuating

Another thread from a Mac noob...

Anyways, I got a MBP 13" the other day and everything is grand. The only problem I have really is the battery. I charged the battery to 100% and it said I had 10.29 battery remaining. Two mins later I had 8 hrs left and then a few seconds later, I had 5 hrs. The battery time is jumping all over the place.

I have calibrated the battery so to see would make a difference, however its doing the same thing again.

I wouldn't be using the laptop too hard, just itunes and chrome open with the screen backlight half full.

    Is this normal?

Sounds normal. The time left is just an estimate. It will fluctuate based on what you are doing. More intensive tasks drain the battery quicker.

    Makes sense.

I guess this 10 hours battery life I have been hearing about would happen If I turned everything off and set the backlight to low..

Is it a brand new macbook, or did you get it second hand?

A guy I know had a similar issue with his MBP, think it was about two years old at the time, and the battery basically died completely after showing very unusual estimates. If it's a new macbook with a good battery in it I'd say you're safe enough though.

just a question if you change the battery icon to percentage rather then time does it still jump around?

It won't jump as it just shows a % shows what's in the battery. The time you see jumping is a guess of the amount of time the battery has left based on a low usage.

Don't forget as well; your Mac is only new so it's battery needs a few cycles to be up to it's fullest health. Drain it wholly from it's first few charges and charge it fully and it will help you no end. Also, download Coconut Battery, it's a brilliant app that gives a better read on battery performance.
