Just looking for some information on a laptop of mine that has taken a fall. When you press the power button on it, it comes up saying start repair and in brackets says reccomended. I have done this and it has run solid for 3 days but has not changed in any way. All I really need is to get some stuff off the hard drive but if it could be saved it would be great. Not planning on spending to much cash on it so just wondering if there is a d i y solution to the problem.

    Yes there is.

Download Ubuntu and burn it to a cd. Then you should be able to just stick it into your laptop and "boot" from the cd drive. There's a "how to guide" here.

When you do that you should be able to boot to a new desktop, and you should be able to access your material on the hard drive.

I have tried to download Ubuntu and it starts downloading perfect. When it gets to the end of the download it opens NTI media burner, but when I look for the Ubuntu file to burn onto a cd,it cant be found for some reason. I have downloaded it twice now and still can't locate the file.

When downloading it, choose to save the .ISO image to a folder instead of sending it opening it with your CD burning software.

Then when you've downloaded it, you'll then be burning an image to a CD as opposed to copying it to a CD - there'll be a separate option in your CD/DVD software for this.
