    hey

i'm looking to insure a car in the next month or so and instead of ringing around 700,000 car insurance companies i said i'd ask the lovely people of boards.ie to narrow down my search
the thing is i have a conviction i was disqualified for 2 years between april 2008 and 2010 (driving uninsured)
chances are most companies wouldn't go near me
so basically any advise on which insurers to ask for a quote (NOT QUINN)
    on an 88' golf 1.4

    Cheers dave

in fairness you should have asked us in 2008...

XSdirect might be an option if you don't mind the huge excess.

But in all honesty, even with suggestions on here, you're going to have to ring around to as many brokers/insurance companies as possible anyway. Take an hour tomorrow and start to ring around. There is no other way imo.

    What age are you/other details?
An older car might be harder to insure...

    What's with the smilie?

i was actually gonna ask about the smiley too as its nothing to be proud of.... a red faced smiley would seem more appropriate

Try ARB insurance. When I was getting my first insurance (10 years ago) they specialized in high risk and previously disqualified drivers.

XSDirect would be another option; again they deal with high risk drivers. XSDirect is only a piece of paper on your windscreen tho; chances are youll have a €4000 excess on your policy meaning you have to cover the first €4000 of any claim. Keep your nose clean for a couple of years tho and stay out of trouble and it could be a way of building up a NCB and getting some clean driving under your belt.

Im with Alan as well; make as many phone calls as you can, especially brokers. You never know what they might come up with. Expect to get some hefty quotes tho regardless of who you speak to.

I can almost hear the horsies chomping at the bit.

So i'm closing the gates before they arrive. The OP is asking a very simple question, so lets keep this on topic or people will be infracted/banned.

As someone said, ARB and XS Direct will be your best bets with your conviction. They won't, however, take an '88 car. Try and keep it under 10 years

Xs Direct wont insure a car worth less then 5k rang them 3 months ago looking for a quote.
