What were the prices like lads on average? Wouldn't mind getting a couple of lim heifers. Didn't know Athenry was on today:rolleyes:

the prices varied depending on quality but anything from 900 euros to 1600 euros for the in calf limousins.
good quality red or black limousins in calf to lim ai bull averaged around 1300 euros with weights around 600 kgs.
there was very nice limousin maiden heifers around 500kgs upwards that were fit for bulling. which averaged about 900 euros
there was a lot of belgian blue x british friesan incalf heifers which made big money for what they were , average r grade heifers.
most heifers were sold on the day.

nonsense , there were a few poorer quality animals such as the purebred charolais heifers . there were purebred shorthorns which were plain animals but would suit a certain type of buyer . the majority of the limousins were very good quality , either r or u grades .
the maiden heifers were very good weights for their ages and you would be hard pressed to find better at any sale.

You sound like a man that could pick out a 3/4 bred limousine.

sorry but for a pre-selected sale it was poor,a lot of the lm maiden heifers were small, butty animals and the older ones were a touch plain with narrow shoulders ect...some red lm incalf heifers were very fleshy, one good heifer made over 1500,
1 man i met there travelled over 60 mile in search of bullin heifers,he went home empty handed as they were not good enough

I noticed looking thrugh Donedeal too that certain people (Dealers???) are collecting a lot of heifers and trying to sell them off at 'special sales' at a profit.
While some of them do look to be very classy, a lot of very plain types too.
Would people not be better off investing in a few AI straws from good maternal bulls instead and using them on your BEST cows?

plenty of the maiden heifers were 500kgs upwards which is a good weight for 2 yr old heifers. some of the incalf heifers were a bit light at 550kgs .
there were some very fancy black lim heifers which made good money.
the heifers on offer were from a number of different farmers .
the problem with some of the incalf heifers was they were due to calf next february to march which is too late and probally led to a lower sale price.
i,ve been to the limousin society sales in castlerea and the quality was no better than that on offer in athenry yesterday.

whether its genuine or not it doesnt matter. i dont see the gain to be made by not registering them on time . keeping them for extra time before selling them is just eating into your profits.

From the horses mouth, very good. So how exactly was she bred? I never quite understood all that "3/4 bred" lark. Does the breeding start with a PB dairy freisan crossed with a PB LIM or what?? Now I'm confused....

Example. Pure bred Friesian crossed with pure bred limousin will give a halfbred lim heifer, assuming the calf is a heifer.
Now cross that heifer with another pure bred limousin. Result is a 3/4 bred limousin.

Thanks for that! Can I confuse things a little now by asking what happens if you use 2 different PB sires each time using the same example as above ie starting with a friesan cow mating with a limousine, then mating the resulting heifer with a charolais bull..... you obviously can't use the fraction breed strain thing then??? or can you?

The result in this case is 50% charolais, 25% each lim and friesian.
