zispin 30mg

I hope this is the right forum for this question.

Background: I have long term depression - since I was a child, very severe in late teens and 20s up till about 27 when I became finally stable on Zispin. The GP I had at the time was pretty useless, she'd only ask me what I wanted, and give it to me. I took 15mg Zispin for a year, then upped the dose to 30mg. Other GPs had suggested to me that I should be taking 30mg, I just refused to take that much because 15mg was causing me so much fatigue. I moved around a lot so I had a few different doctors. Eventually I did up my own dosage to 30mg a day and I have felt great since. I can honestly say I don't suffer from depression now. Also the fatigue issues seem to only occur with the lower dose.

Problem is I appear to suffer from terrible heartburn and constipation with the 30mg dose. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this> Been to the GP, no real issue with my stomach and my diet is fine. I will go through a box of Rennies in days. I sometimes take Asprin because the pain from the heartburn is so bad at night. And as for the constipation, I don't think I've had an empty bowel since last Christmas (TMI, but necessary info!)

I have decided to experiment and take the 15mg dose again for 6-8 weeks. Already I have decreased heartburn and things are starting to move in the old digestive tract again. I didn't consult my GP about this, because I honestly find in regards to my anti depressants, they usually tell me to take what I find best. Seriously.

Just wondering if anyone else has experience of taking Zispin at either dose and whether they suffered similiar side effects?

I am not willing to come off it or change medications either - it was a long trial to find a medication to suit me, tried many, and I am very happy with Zispin. The side effects are a minor inconvenience.

you should discuss that with your doctor again

Don't think anyone here can answer that

In fairness, if the Zispin is causing you so much discomfort, is it really what you find best? You need to discuss this with your doctor and make him/her understand how badly this heartburn etc., is affecting you. That's all you can do.

OP; a lot of my clients are on that med for help with their depression, I don't know of it as a side effect, but none of my patients [I'm a psychotherapist] have reported it. Speak to your gp, as a would be a side effect it is one that could be managed very easy.

Yeah it seems like an unusual side effect. If its bad just discuss it with your gp. Also aspirin is an NSAID and I heard these can sometimes aggrevate heartburn problems. So yeah you should discuss with gp. I was on zispin for a while and it just made me extremely tired so I stopped it.

Thanks. I don't know anyone else taking Zispin so I am not aware if anyone is suffering similiar side effects. Since I can trace it back to starting Zispin at a higher dose it's very unlikely to have been caused by anything else.

Though compared with other anti-depressants I've been on, it's a minor discomfort to live with, tbh!

I was on Zispin for a few months and the only side effect I suffered from was the crazy tiredness. That was intolerable for me, so I changed.
I know how hard it is to find an anti-d that works for you, so I understand why you wanna stick with the Zispin. :) Hope you can work something out, 'cause side effects are pretty horrible to be dealing with.

Hey, thought I'd let you guys know how I got on adjusting my dosage. My heartburn decreased a lot and my constipation left completely. I have started to suffer from paranoia again so I will be going back to my 30mg dose from tomorrow. I did almost 3 weeks at the half dose then, and it set my body back to normal. I wouldn't intend to do this very often as it might have a detrimental effect on my mood, but once a year is probably not the worst idea. Bowel problems run in my family and constant constipation is not good for ones bowels!

For the first time in my life I believe I am starting to "battle with my weight" (ie. - not to put it on, but to lose some!) so hopefully a better diet and exercise routine will also help with the digestive problems cause by Zispin.

Hi - I got a prescription for this yesterday 15mgs on top of valdoxan 50mgs - I took a half tablet 7.5mgs and I feel absolutely sedated all day. Not nice at all. No get up and go at all and had to go to bed for 2 hours today. If this is how this medicine makes me feel I don't think I can take it. If that is the case I am despairing cos I fear there is nothing that suits me. valdoxan doesn't make me feel like this but has stopped working

First of all you shouldn't be altering your dose flippantly 'as an experiment'. This should only be done in consultation with your doctor. Many of these drugs work on the principal of a continuous dose to maintain the correct level of Mirtazapine (Zispin) in the body and by changing this, you make yourself susceptible to other side-effects, even if it apparently cures your initial complaint.

Second, you mentioned taking Aspirin. Aspirin, and other NSAID's, can worsen heartburn as it is a grave irritant to the stomach.

The difficulty with anti-depressant medication (or NaSSA in this case) is that they can practically stipulate 50 side-effects and so if you experience 1 or 2 of them, you suddenly assume it came from the medication. To be honest, constipation and heartburn seem very strange side-effects from Zispin but at the same time, it's not altogether impossible i.e. most symptoms are neurologically based such as feeling sleepy etc. which other posters here have highlighted.

But yeah, go to your GP as the other posters have recommended.

Valdoxan, or Agomelatine is classified as a Melatonin Agonist - and Melatonin is involved in the circadian rhythm, or sleep cycle, so I think it's understandable why you may be feeling quite sedated.

The problem is that many, if not most, of these anti-depressant medications will make you sleepy. It's part of the therapeutic effect that you're not over-thinking and you become more relaxed hence allowing you to get on with your life reducing the negative thoughts hence making the condition more manageable for you. But yes, some drugs are much worse than others in terms of sleepiness. Contact your prescriber and let him or her know it's negatively impacting your daily routine too much to become therapeutic. The prescriber may inform you that it is temporary and you'll 'get used' to it with time and this is true for many people, but he or she may change it, there's only one way for you to find out.

thank you for your reply. I was advised to take the full 15mgs instead and to take it earlier in the day as opposed to an hour before bedtime. I did that and now take 15mgs zispin at 5.30 and 50mgs valdoxan at 10pm and I feel fine now. The low dose zispin actually made me feel groggy the following day whereas the higher 15mgs didn't have that effect at all.
