Woman loses defamation, breach of privacy case against 'Sunday World'

    http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2010/1009/1224280700127.html

The judge came down on freedom of expression, however:
Yesterday, the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, rejected Ms Hickey’s breach of privacy and defamation claims but added he felt compelled to state the articles “represented the lowest standards of journalism imaginable”.

“It is a regrettable fact of life that such material sells newspapers,” he said. He made the remarks in the context of an application for costs of the case which he will deal with later.

As we have seen from figures elsewhere, the Sunday Worst is the leader in the Irish market. To be fair to the Sunday World, there are far worse trangressions of privacy and clear acts of slander committed by Irish people on Twitter. How close are we to see some legal action about that?

Journalism in this country is in the gutter, the judge was right, the sooner some of these rags go bust the better.

considering the individual parent companies of the tabloids here - I doubt that going bust is going to happen too soon.

Whatever about the standards or taste of any of the tabloids, there's a hell of a lot of nonsense being banded about on privacy.

For example, those who court attention and think they can control it. Or people thinking that photos cannot be taken of them in public without their permission.

common sence and common decency is what the judge was talking about, journalists and photo journalists should have this anyway if they are professional, editors of these rags (also some broadsheets) are to blame, its in the editorial room that standards should be set. where have real journalists been for the 15 years while curruption was rife in this country and has us where we are now, they were in the pockets of politicans, i suppose following mothers of newly born children around with s long lens and a notepad is good journalism these days!!
