Hey was just wondering is it possible to defer a grant??I'v applied for the grant and should get it but would like to drop out of my postgrad course and do a different one next year! Could I defer my grant if i'm awarded it?

AFAIK I don't think it's possible, given the academic year has already started (and I'm assuming you've started one post-grad and want to drop out in favour of a different one next year). When I was an undergrad I was on a maintenance grant and I dropped out to start a different course and the next year (my second attempt at first year) I didn't get the grant.

Wouldn't be 100% sure if that goes for postgrad though.

I would suggest ringing them immediately, to tell them. and get straight on to the registry to tell them you're dropping out, they can write you a letter to say you did, and send it straight on to the VEC/council. I can't guarantee that'll permit you to apply next year, but if you have been awarded a grant in respect of a year, you can't claim it again in the future, so if you give them a bell and tell them you dont want to claim this year, you *might* be albe to sort it.
The soooner you get on to them, the better your chances.

you can not defer a grant. a grant is offered and has to be accepted...grants for 11/12 will be assessed on 2010 income .

by all means ring and ask but i wouldnt be expecting a favourable decision
