Peugeot 206 - Clutch and gearbox

Hi. I left my car in for a check yesterday, as I'd noticed a small oil/fluid leak from the engine. It's a Peugeot 206, 8 years old, around 76,000 miles.

I've been advised that the leak is coming from the seal on the gearbox, so the seal will need to be replaced. To do this, it seems they will have to do a some stripping down on the engine, which would involve a good bit of labour. They also believe that the clutch may start to go shortly, as the clutch pedal is a bit stiff (it's hard for me to judge, as I'm used to the car) - also due to the age and mileage of the car. So, they suggest it would be best to replace the clutch at the same time, rather than going through the same labour soon again. The quote is around €450-€500.

I really just want to ask, does replacement of the clutch at this point make sense to the more mechanically minded people?? These guys seem sound, but as a person who knows very little about car engines, I always like to check!!

    Thanks in advance...

I would have thought the seals could be replaced by taking out the drive shafts alone. But given the work done to get that far, removal of the gearbox would only be a little extra. If you are planning on holding onto the car for a while then do it. As regards the price i cant say if thats a good price or not. Someone more in the know might chime in for that.
    Good luck!

if yer keeping the car . then get the clutch done on it !!

as their gonna be at it , they might as well do it now .
co,s if it go,s later they will charge labour again for it !!!!!!!

peugeot clutchs are soft & i know of 7 that have gone in the last few months ,, all cars had less than 40,000 mile on them too..

clutch will cost you retail around 242.00 euro & then labour on top of that with labour been the dearest part ( well main dealer prices anyway )

If that price is for replacing the seal and clutch and inclusive of labour & charges then go for it. I got shafted for €520 to replace a clutch on a 206 I owned.

They can indeed replace the seal by just taking the shaft out so the majority of that work is the clutch. Takes 3 hours labour.
