    Lads,

I'm a noobie in this forum. Can anybody point me in the right direction for a 2.5 Subaru Impreza? They seem scarce on the ground. Any tips for looking at them?

    TIA

Might be worth your while looking across the water. Seems to be a good few available over there.

Check out the classified section of www.pistonheads.com

As with all turbo petrol cars, maintanence is key to ensure they run properly so always make sure it comes with a full service history and that the services were done on time, as these cars tend to have have shorter service intervals than others.

There's an old model 2.5 STI on carzone (I thought that model only came in a 2L??) I personaly prefer em to the new model too.

    I can't link to it as I'm on mobile but it's a 07

I would say importing from the UK would be crazy, it'd be in the top VRT band which is 30% IIRC

As Bonito said, you don't mention budget. I'll just fire one in there for the sake of it. I like STI's myself.

Abi, the one thing mentioned was a 2.5L engine, whice only came along with the newer STIs, this is the one I mentioned earlier

OP, if I had the money to buy a newer STI, I would be looking at something along the lines of this...

(I can only assume the budget is around this as you are looking at a newer model STI)

Thanks for all the help lads, budget would be around 20K.

with 20k i would go for something rare. a sti spec c or wr1. they will hold their value better in the long run and more exclusive but the 2.5 are a good car with a more reliable engine imo. isdc is a good site and the lads there are very helful and sound. maybe stick up a thread saying your looking to purchase and see what interest ya get. it mite get lads that haven't got their cars for sale to part with them with the thought of a quick sale. thats what i done for my cosworth

just noticed that this thread on the Subaru Imprezza was in the modified motors section....

If your planning to mod your new purchase you should consider this from Subaru in reponse to the complaints about the engine going after mods that the older engines would have taken in their stride...

To benchmark the project, a standard WRX STI engine unit was run on a Dynamometer for 50 hours non-stop at varying power and speed settings to replicate the most extreme usage and to highlight any areas of concern; needless to say, no problems became evident despite being operated under these intense conditions. Cosworth Technical Director, Bruce Wood, confirmed the WRX STI OE specification unit passed Coworth’s test regime.
“We were encouraged that the standard STI engine passed our 50 hour continuous test, which we consider to be rigorous, as this indicated that the starting point for the CS400 programme was suitably robust.”

Good auld boxer engine is fairly bullitproof. Cheers for that link

The STI bottom ends seem to be the most bulletproof part of them.

I might be a bit late to the party, but I'd have to ask why you'd rather the 2.5 over the 2.0?

Same bhp, more engine failures(afaik), and higher tax.

I've had a 03 and 05 2.0L. The 05 was irish, never gave any trouble and was un modded.

The 03 is jap, gave some trouble but got sorted by reputable builder up north for £1800 and is now streets better than any EU version.

If I'd 20k, i'd be looking for a 05 on jap 2.0L and just make sure its mapped for irish fuel.
